I'll admit, when I first popped this in I expected more of the tunes made famous by movies, but I was pleasantly surprised - It has many of the 'classics' related to the Vietnam War era along with lots of others that I hadn't heard before (I'm only 24) but my parents and older co-workers knew (along the lines of "Gawd - I haven't heard that in YEARS!!"). I brought it to Iraq when I deployed and the set became an 'office' (tent) favorite even among today's 20-somethings. Great to yowl along to when you're filling sand bags or pulling guard. There's really something for everyone - from surf songs to motown to 'hippie' stuff.

This one followed barely six months after Vol 4, and spent three weeks as the UK's No 1 album in April/May 1971.
The star track for me is 'Tears Of A Clown' from Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, which had hit No 1 in 1970. It was recorded a few years earlier, and was 'discovered' by a Tamla Motown employee in London. They releaesd the track, and the rest is history. Following the British success, they put it out in America, where it also did the business. The song is still never off the radio, but it is one that I never tire of.
Tamla Motown in London had a fairly free hand in what they released. They knew their market, and they knew what would get airplay. This Chartbuster series can be a good source of British ... Read More:

well-assembled box set containing just some of Motown's most golden and definitive classics. Nobody knew Motown Records was going to take off in the way it did. Berry Gordy intended to use his artists to break down the then racial barriers, intending to encapsulate a golden and distinct sound that would not only please a black audience but would too appeal to whites. Berry Gordys visions for the company paid off. Key artists like Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder attracted a huge following from both blacks and whites.
Seemingly echoing the restrictions of ghetto life in Detroit (which is where Motown began) was the effective, bluesey Money (Thats What I Want) by Barret Strong, Motowns debut release. There is a raw, ... Read More:
