Birtwistle - Gawain

This is music in the very powerful style that Birtwistle has developed in the last four decades or so. My problem with Gawain: Birtwistle seems to have imagined the entire Gawain story in one mode, which I might call one of ominous dread. The banquet scene doesn't feel festive, the seduction doesn't feel sexy, it's all just pounding, driving fury and foreboding. This is not a problem I have with The Mask of Orpheus, which is much more fully imagined. Nor is it a problem in, say, Earth Dances, which has similar music to that of Gawain, but one doesn't feel that a complex story has been fused into a single impulse.

Although its been around for 3 years or so I recently bought this album on the strength of Brown Sugars "The Game Is Over".This "indemander" is still played heavily at big Northern events drawing it's influence from writer/musician Vince Montana's Philadelphia years.Its a dancy crossover classic with major/minor key changes that send shivers down many a soully's spine!!
I didn't realise how much quality there was on the rest of the album and how many tracks were Philly influenced.The pick of the other tracks for me have to be Chairman Of The Boards General Johnson's "Dont Walk Away", Gloria Gaynor "This Love Affair" and Originals "Good Lovin.....". By 1980 it was probably fair to say that Motown wasn't exactly in the best of places. The move to LA in the mid 70's no longer seemed like the good idea it was - especially as this had partly been to help diversify into the movie business and "Mahogany" isn't the most memorable of films at the best of times - then couple this with disco. Disco could well be described as the genre which just about killed off Motown. Try as they might the best Motown could manage was not classic disco, they were just too soulful. Yet in 1980 Motown was still there and, with disco ironically in its death throws, about to go through something of a rennaisance chronicalled in part by this collection.
