Bring the Family was my introduction to John Hiatt in 1988 and I have been a fan ever since that day. I too am astounded that he has never reached the masses, probably due to the clowns who decide the playlist at wunnerful BBC radio although I do recall DLT playing tracks from Slow Turning. If you want to listen to grown up music that covers many styles, subjects and tastes, then Hiatt is the man. He writes from the heart, shoots from the hip, and is always backed by quality musicians. A must for fans of serious singer/songwriters. For me he gets 10 stars every time.

I consider John Hiatt one of the most important American songwriters of the last 30 years.
This 2-CD set includes 40 songs spanning 15 of Hiatt's albums recorded for various record labels (Epic, MCA, Geffen, A&M, Capitol and Vanguard.)
The collection under review highlights Hiatt's brilliant solo career from its beginning in 1974, to more than a decade running through various styles. He went through rock & roll, new wave pop before finally settling on a rootsy fusion of rock & roll, country, blues, and folk with his 1987 album "Bring the Family." This was his first album to reach the charts.
This journey through Hiatt's past meanders through original versions of songs covered by a musical ... Read More:

This album was originally titled "The Best Of John Hiatt 1973-1998", but since it effectively sidesteps his earliest recordings, it is actually more like "The Best Of John Hiatt 1983-1998".
Compared with A&M's "Greatest Hits 1987-94", this Capitol release also features material from Hiatt's 1983 album "Riding With The King", from which it draws the title track, but unfortunately not the great roots-rock of "You May Already Be A Winner" and "She Loves The Jerk". But there is a lot of good stuff here anyway (the track list is quite similar to the A&M compilation). Hiatt's tough, muscular blend of rock, folk, country and blues works particularly well on "Perfectly Good Guitar", "Cry Love", "Child Of The Wild Blue Yonder", "Slow Turning", ... Read More:

John Hiatt's 1987 album "Bring The Family" is without question his best ever, not least because he was able to work with his dream band (Ry Cooder, Jim Keltner and Nick Lowe). But this 1989 follow-up is close to matching it.
"Slow Turning" is Hiatt's first collaboration with Louisiana trio The Goners (including slide guitarist Sonny Landreth). The arrangements are variously acoustic and electric, and several guest stars pop up: Former Eagles guitarist Bernie Leadon plays his National resonator guitar, then-session vocalist Ashley Cleveland and Dennis Locorriere of Dr Hook contributes backing vocals, and the Amazing Rhythm Aces' James Hooker sits in on organ.
Highlights include the tough rockers "Paper Thin" and "Tennessee Plates", ... Read More:
