Great Singers at the Mariinsky TheatreSearch: Thats Life by: Orchestra Release Date December 01, 1994 It earns 5 stars because as usual, Nimbus Records have done such a good job of transferring these antique 78rpm records...at least, nominally 78 because some were deliberately recorded at other speeds for various reasons. And it is an excellent compilation of many of the outstanding singers of the time, besides being associated with this theatre. It tends to focus on Soprano and Tenor arias though a bass and a few mezzos are presented - this reflects the recording trends of the day. If one is prepared to "listen through" the defects of 78rpm acoustic recordings, one can only marvel at the mastery of these singers - truly products of the bel canto era.
