I decided to read "Othello" after enjoying "Hamlet",another one of Shakespeare's celebrated tragedies. I must admit that I did not enjoy "Othello" quite as much however. It's plot is quite complicated; labyrinthine at times, and much of it's language is obscure and hard to follow . The play concerns itself with the endeavours of the thoroughly malevolent and evil Iago to destroy the Moorish Venetian general Othello, his boss. He does so by poisoning Othello against his innocent wife Desdemona. He convinces him that his wife is having an affair with Othello's deputy (and Iago's rival) Cassio. Othello takes the bait and duly obliges Iago by becoming filled up with hatred of his wife which eventually leads to a tragic ending and a series of untimely ... Read More:

Othello really touched my heart. I studied Romeo and Juliet at GCSE and then went on to study Othello at A level and I was encapsulated by the plot. Iago is the human version of the devil with the power to crush his victims into nothingness. The way that he destroys everyone around him is amasing but yet the audience can't help but love him. The way that Othello has his heart broken is incredible and filled with so much emotion that the audience can't help but feel empathy for him and the end almost reduced me to tears for everyone involved. It was a really good read and I enjoyed studying it for my A level.

"Albert Herring" was the first of Britten's full length operas that I ever bought, when I was 16 and studying "Noye's Fludde" for a school examination; and at the time, this recording (in its original vinyl LP version) was the only one available. The transfer to CD works well enough, I've no problems with that. (I'm not sure what the sleeve picture of Peter Pears and Ben Britten buying vegetables from, I think, Jonah Baggott in Aldeburgh High Street has to do with the opera, but there you go.) However, much as I admire the work of Peter Pears, he is the wrong person for the role of Albert. He sings the role well enough, as one would expect, but he sounds too mature: listening to him in this recording, I could perhaps envisage Albert as being in his mid ... Read More:

Close your eyes and play this CD and you are back in the theatre listening to this wonderful musical. Hours later you still have the music and the words buzzing around your head as it is so memorable. Stephanie Lawerence is very good playing Mrs Johnstone, and was an exceptional singer but the Liverpool accent was perhaps best produced by Linda Nolan although she did not have the quality of Stephanie's voice. I have see the musical four times with the same Narrator, and he is is superior to Warwick Evans. Also, Eddie is today played with gusto and at all four performances he has been fantastic and what an accent. At all performances the audience has given a standing ovation to the musical and its cast. The CD relates the story with its wonderful music ... Read More:
