This is a surprising collection in that with most rock collections you get the usual songs but with this collection the tracklist is surprising and very varied and rather than rely on the standard rock song's (Ace Of Spades, All Right Now and so on) this offers an array of bands from Glam (The Sweet), Classic Rock (ZZ Top, Alice Cooper), Metal (Judas Priest, Pantera) Alt-Rock (Screaming Trees), Grunge (Alice In Chains).

Add to that the fact that you may own some of these songs (as I do) I was quite surprised to find the bulk of this collection was new to me. Add to that the fact that it is 100 songs over five discs at such a great price and you can't go wrong.

This is a pretty predictable soundtrack for Bridget Jones 2, mixing the usual smoothie suspects (Barry White, 10cc, Carly Simon) with contemporary chart toppers (Jamelia, Kylie Minogue, Beyonce). And yet there are some spectacular new recordings, in particular Amy Winehouse's superb, emotive cover of "Will you still love me tomorrow" - something to savour amidst the absence of any new material from her. Rufus Wainwright sings one of his mother's songs beautifully (although Dido sounds like she's reading out a menu in her self-conscious solo). And with "Misunderstood" Robbie Williams provides a surprisingly good confessional ("Trying to be misunderstood / Just a product of my childhood..."). The previous reviewer could not understand why this compilation why such great value. I can probably enlighten him... They have cut some of the greatest songs on here right back. For instance, the mighty 'Purple Rain'- you just start getting into the song and the solo begins... and it gets faded out! (At about 4 minutes in). This is a cardinal sing and means this set is virtually worthless. Another noticable fade is the great Python Lee Jackson song, 'In a broken dream'. What were they thinking???

Not all songs are cut (i.e. the rule seems to be if it runs loger than 4 and a half minutes we'll cut it.)

Tragic - had great potential.

From the same folks who produce the "Hits" collections (Sony/BMG/Warners) comes this tie-in with the independent radio chart show. In fact it could have been called "Hits 57 and a half" because ten tracks were on the last Hits album, though I suppose it could have been worse, and it does contain the three most recent (as I write) No 1 singles.

As usual there's something here for nearly everyone, with the emphasis on straightforward pop, boy-band and Pop Idol acts, and the more accessable R&B from the likes of Alicia Keys and Beyonce Knowles. It is in fact a better selection than some recent issues from these companies, and it is very good value.

After rocking out to the well compilated Air Guitar 3, I was a quite displeased to find "The LAST Air Guitar Album in the World...EVER!!" in bold letters. Then I found this recently released album in the shops, Permission to ROCK. The track list was the thing that really got me. It seemed that the best songs from the previous Air Guitar albums had been compiled into here (a compilation of a compilation if you will) plus 2 fantastic songs from rock revival chart toppering newcomers The Darkness. The album is a great rock collection to listen to, dispite the lack of rock monsters like AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Guns N' Roses and Def Leppard.
