As a compilation cd, this album has a great overall sound and should appeal to fans of 'rock' music from 1960s through to present day (I personally found it a good album to listen to in the car). The album is a real mix of singles, some classic and some new, and a few lesser known tracks such as 'King of Rock and Roll' by Prefab Sprout. My only gripe is that I sometimes find myself skipping one or two of the weaker songs such as E=MC2.
On another note, as a warning, the tracklisting and order of songs shown here on amazon is different (presumably incorrect) to the copy I own, and there are tracks listed here that do not appear on the actual cd (tracks by Dandy Warhols, Blondie, Mock Turtles , Vibrators, Fatboy Slim and House of Love). I have to don my "hmmmmm" face for this review I'm afraid.
So, I suppose it's possible to have a "Mod Music" album without the Who or the Small Faces or The Faces, after all this is one such! But when you also leave out the Lambrettas, The Jam, Rod Stewart and Manfred Mann as well, you do start to wonder. The whole thing plays somewhat like a Madness/UB40/The Beat benefit in fact.
The inclusion of sixties rarities like "Rudi's in Love" by the Locomotive and "Seven Days Too Long" by Chuck Wood (incorrectly credited in the plural "Woods" on this one!) - a straight reggae pop song and a 70s Northern Soul classic respectively - just reinforce the idea that this collection was more about what the compiler could get, rather than any ... This is a brilliant, eclectic mix of guitar based songs. OK they are not all legends and OK there are some standards not included BUT that is the beauty of it. Don't read the track list and just play it and you will be continually suprised and delighted at what you hear. Robert Cray followed by Johnny Kidd & the Pirates. Howlin' Wolf followed by Steppenwolf, Bonnie Raitt by Mayall. I bought this for my teenage son who is learning to play guitar - he loves it but he can't get it out of my machine. Buy it today and smile for the next month!

This set represents a creditably even handed, 43 track sweep through five decades of chart toppers. The album does itself a favour by missing out any chart toppers from the last ten years that typify the 'straight-in-at-number-one with a fan base push then a plummet of 22 places on week two' pattern - caused by declining sales in the singles market. These are, at least, proper number ones in the traditional sense. Since the 1960's, when almost every Beatles single was an automatic chart topper, the best records by the greatest artists have rarely been number ones. With that fact in mind, you'd have to conclude that this album does largely represent the best that number one singles have had to offer; there's 'Good Vibrations',' Reach Out',' Maggie May',' Nothing Compares ... Having bought this last year I was dismayed when it was borrowed and never returned. Quite simply the best cd i have ever bought I had to replace it and could find it nowhere but on Amazon. I am now enjoying every single song on here not a track on it you feel you have to skip. Well done the compilations team.

As my friend says "You've got all these tracks but in a different order".
In this case it's only partly right but to a 60's Soul fan and a regular at the Hammersmith Palais on a Monday night this collection brings back some fabulous memories. I think that they are nearly all there.
Also memories of Ready Steady Go on a Friday night which had the catchphrase "The weekend starts here".

'best air guitar album in the world...ever' is no small claim, but this classic truly delivers. turn your stereo up to 11, lift your imaginary axe and get ready to stage dive off your ikea coffee table.
Now I understand that there are lots of these albums with pretty much the same songs on, but this box set is the definative collection and it spits on the rest from rock heavenly hights
