I cannot describe just how much I have enjoyed this collection, and I highly recommend it.
As a child I spent many happy hours stacking up my parents' late 50s and early 60s singles onto a real record player (not a tarty modern 'turntable'), and for ages I searched for a CD compilation that not only included the tracks I remembered, but also captured the musical spirit of the times.
Although I had not heard of many of the 101 tracks on this album before buying it, I now listen to all of it constantly. I defy anyone to get bored of this, covering as it does a great variety of different musical styles from the mid 50s to the early 60s.
Even Cliff Richard is great!

This is one of the better outings for the highly underrated and under recorded Gary Bartz.This live setting sees him in good company with Claudio roditi(trumpet),John Hicks(piano),Ray Drummond(bass) and Al Foster(drums) and given that two of the tracks weigh in at nearly 20 mins a piece it really gives Bartz a chance to stretch out and build a solo.He plays with a passion and energy that rarely shows in his studio work.
The only down side is that the sound quality could be better and especially when Bartz works up a good head of steam he wanders away from the microphone making the sound a bit patchy in places which i guess loses this album it's deserved 5th star.

Bossa Antigua

This is a lovely record that showcases Paul Desmond as a composer as well as a player. The title track is a memorable tune that's been going around in my head for days. Unusual to find a bossa album with no songs by Brazilian songwriters, but Desmond's compositions show up really well.

Jim Hall's cool guitar perfectly sets off Desmond's cool alto, and it's nice to hear Connie Kay setting up some real Brazilian grooves. The quartet has a beautiful relaxed sound, and these days it's a joy to hear the silence between and behind the notes.
