This is a very decent compilation of alternative pop and rock from the 1980s. But the track listing makes it look sensational, as if all these bands have done covers of each other's songs. Imagine: The Jam doing Cattle and Cane! Magazine's take on Oblivious! Who wouldn't smile at the thought of They Might Be Giants covering Mercy Seat? Julian Cope has more right than most to have a crack at 24 Hour Party People. Etc.

Unfortunately, the tracks and artists have all got misaligned in the listing above and they're all the original versions. Sigh.

A good selection of the New Romantic scene from the early 80s: I should know, I lived it for awhile!

Most of the cult bands of the time are represented here. There are some five-star tracks (Ultravox's Vienna) and some three-star ones too. But overall I give this collection four stars.

Get out the eyeliner, sit back, and turn up the volume!

There are some decent tracks on here buried amongst the oft-repeated tat selection also included. My main complaint is that this selection has absolutely nothing to do with 'New Wave' post punk. If you want to find an excellent compilation of 'new wave' bands see if you can dig out the now deleted 'Once in a lifetime' double disc set.

Why record companies want to put out such a selection of this, which just throws in all types of odds and sods from the 80's with no real focus, is beyond me really......
