Stereolab are the band I most look forward to, releasing new records, and as usual they have released a mini-album before a full length. With the sad news of Mary Hansen's death I wondered what the change would sound like. Her vocals are missed and are mainly replaced by Laetitia. The 5 tracks initially sound similar to Stereolab a few years ago, but with a few listens the hooks and grooves grow in pleasure. They are furrowing familiar ground yet with more skill and surprises. Tracks 2 and 5 are particularly good, and this mini is a must for Stereolab fans and people wanting something fresh and different.

I have chosen to review this set as it would appear to be the only way now left by which to acquire the sublime Byzantium, as performed by Solti, the Chicago Symphony and the majectic Faye Robinson.
The first disc comprises Tippett songs which I am in no position to comment on as they are some of the few Tippett items I do not own and know. A situation I will most certainly remedy.
The second disc gives us A Child of our Time, probably Tippett's most popular and performed work. Ironically so in my opinion because this is representative of the earliest era of Tippett's career when arguably he had yet to find the utterly distinctive voice and commence the journey to the most refined individuality that would eventually ... It's very hard to listen objectively to any other recorded version of "Tosca" when your first and enduring experience of the "shabby little shocker" has been the peerless Callas/di Sabata version, but I try.
One first notices how carefully Rostropvich conducts this fluid, mercurial music; every sudden mood change is given its proper weight and consideration - but for me that results in a certain languid quality which can underplay the drama. Having said that, there's no lack of weight in the "Te Deum" and the cannon shots are beautifully integrated into the finale of Act 1. Rostropovich consistently allows the subtleties of the score to emerge. His approach, rather surprisingly, is shared by Bonisolli; he has a beautiful voice but ... Read More:

Competitive in all respects, not least in the modest outlay needed. Sorry to sound mercenary, but with the great number of versions available, many of them extremely good (Price, Freni, even Te Kanawa) it is important to consider the cost, especially when the version under consideration is as wonderful as this one. Caballe is in her element: impassioned when required, tender when needed and, above all, singing in glorious voice - great waves of burnished tone and those famous pianissimi! Carreras is similarly inspired (who would not be, with Caballe on this form?) and they sing together with enormous sensitivity and power. Colin Davis gives for me the best interpretation on disc: passionate but, at the same time, controlled (it's so easy to go ... Read More:
