First off, I loved John Peels' radio show, his banter and music selection was like no other.
The experience of listening to Mr. Peel was simply that you never knew what on Earth to expect next; Soul, Dub Reggae, Hungarian Polka, Techno, Drum n Bass, a crackley old Cowboy record or a Top of the Pops cover version of Bowies' "Starman". The man was the epitome of "eclectic". He taught me that in a world of trendy new bands a 30 year old Blues tune or the sublime Ivor Cutler was just as important (if you truly love music).

So, what on Earth is the point of putting out an album of music, that we as fans must already own or have heard a million times.

The idea of taking a bunch of new wave eighties classics, spraying them with French pheramones and adding some Astrid Gilberto Bossa Nova, may not appeal to everyone's taste. But nouvelle vague's original interpretations of these songs are so cheeky, irreverent and irresistable, I defy anyone not to instantly fall in love with them.
They have created the perfect chill out party album.
My favourite tracks are Sister of Mercy's 'MARIAN' and Tuxedomoon's 'IN A MANNER OF SPEAKING'. I'd not heard the original of this song, but this astonishing version is just beauty incarnate.
On the last track, a cover of The Specials 'FRIDAY NIGHT SATURDAY MORNING', a sultry, French chanteuse with the voice of an angel sings 'but the chip shop isn't ... Read More:

Now the thing about this compilation is that if you were around when these tracks were new you probably have them all on vinyl 7" and you cant bear to hear them without the crackle. It just isnt right. However if you are a 17 year old who thinks they just invented sex, drugs, rock and roll, bought a few green day and killer records then this is about ideal. It has all the anthems on it and its a blooming good party album. Me? Well i'm 36 and i was slightly too young to be at the concerts but young enough to say "i was there" Reward by Teardrop explodes was my first ever single (that said i also bought toyah wilcox and all the fame LP's so i wasnt that cool really) and now i do the cleaning and the ironing and run at the gym listening to the pain of teen anxt ...
