I am very fond of singer-songwriters, and have always been a bit nervous of Norma Waterson's music, as I am not really a "folky"-type. However, the sheer range and breadth of material here is remarkable, and Norma's voice is so emotive and expressive that I could listen to her all night. Particular mention, among the eclectic rangte of songs, has to go to "Fallen Leaves". Brings a lump to my throat every time, with its honest and true depiction of the benefits of dying young, rather than growing old, frail and infirm with your family looking on. "Honest" and "True" are words that sum up this album perfectly, and I will be shopping around for more Norma. I am no longer nervous of her folky image. She's quite remarkable.

The Very Tall Band Live at the Blue Note, 1998

This recording is a chance to hear 3 Jazz masters late in their careers. The Very Tall band is a reference to the album they recorded in 1962 as "Very Tall The Oscar Peterson Trio with Milt Jackson", which incidentally is a fabulous album.

So does this live up to the very high standards they set 36 years ago. Well the simple answer is no. The loss of the use of his left hand means that Oscar Peterson is no longer quite the powerhouse rhythm player that he was before the stroke. Also just occasionally there is a fragility to his right hand lines that perhaps you wouldn't pick up on if his left hand was fully functioning.
