This time it's good to see some less well-known pieces keep company with the favourites. However, there is still a good helping of pieces which everyone used to know but few could name. Who remembers Ronald Binge's Miss Melanie as a TV sig tune in the 50s? Or programmes like Housewives' Choice or My Word? It's good to see a nod towards our own time too with the inclusion of the waltz which was used in the film Titanic. Keep buying!

Any wonderfully uninspired music critic must believe that artists employ stock 'beach boys' harmonies in order to enhance the emotional resonance of their creation, much in the same way, I suppose, that bands lump an orchestra at the back and instruct them to pump some poignancy into a dog of a ballad. Consequently, every record with harmonies is, fairly or unfairly, belittled into being 'Beach Boys-like', and really, every record sounds like the beach boys if you listen hard enough, or if you don't listen at all. The much less common 'Brian Wilson'-like description refers to the quirky soundscapes Wilson used on the Beach Boys records and so because, even though widely predicted in the 1960s, popular groups have unfortunately yet to adopt ... After hearing this album for the first time, I was left wondering what would be the result if Sean O'Hagan, Darian Sahanaja (The Wondermints) and the legendary Brian Wilson got together to make a follow-up to 'Smile'. Sadly, at the moment, one can only imagine but until that day, this album will do nicely!
A previous review mentions that Sean O'Hagan is not too fond of the Brian Wilson comparisons. Its a shame, because he is capable of producing music that is clearly on a par. Not many of the tracks on this album have lyrics, but that does not matter as it is the music that leaves an impression, long after you have listened to it.
