Of especial note are the 1971 TOTP recordings of Let's Hang On and I've Got You Under My Skin, both live, very well recorded and very true to the 1971 stage sound. Frankie's voice is at its best and this has to be heard loud to get the full dramatic impact. Thoroughly recommended.

Pennies from Heaven

This two CD set is an absolute delight from start to finish. All of the songs are highly representative of the era. The lyrics are lovely (if a little dated!) the melodies very nice. There is a certain tinge of regret and melancholy in most of the songs, its wonderfully atmospheric. Great voices of the era are represented and although I never saw the TV show the music is very enjoyable. I particularly like 'In the Middle of a Kiss' and 'Without that Certain Thing,' but these are just two of many wonderful songs. The information about the recordings is interesting too; 'Savoy Grill, Dec. 1932' for example. How the world has changed since then but I hope the Savoy Grill has changed less than most places!

I came close to awarding this collection 4 out of 5, but then thought better of it.

A purist would find this CD a disappointment, since fewer than half of the 48 tracks come from the BBC television series, (the vast majority of the originals were omitted, or a different version given) and the title could therefore be considered misleading.

Although two versions of the title song 'Pennies from Heaven' appear, one by Bing Crosby and another by 'The Street Singer' Arthur Tracy, only the latter appeared in the television series , where (according to my treasured LPs) it was also sung by Edward Molloy with Louis Levy and the Gaumont British Symphony.
