I own this album on vinyl. It is very special.I knew very little about jazz (and scatting) when I brought it.Yes it does contain some eighties, dodgy synth riffs but it also contains (my personal discovery at the time) what pure singing should be about.This fact makes it listenable after many years.I went to see Al in London, alone; on the back of this discovery.I was overwhelmed by the beauty of his performance.I was so proud to tell my friends that I was a fan long before 'Breakin' Away. I felt 'cool' in a jazz way.You should listen and feel 'cool' too.
PS Please do not make Johhny Mathis comparisons as you will sound like my mum and not understand the differance!

Definitely one of my all time favourite Squeeze albums - often overlooked, it's a real cracker packed with melodious gems and Chris Difford's lyrics have never been more acutely observant and incisive....and downright brilliant! From the ashes of a doomed extra-marital affair (Rose I Said) to being joyously & newly loved-up (This Could Be The Last Time) to observing the daily realities of a modern relationship (Can Of Worms). Add to that the sheer joy of Glenn Tilbrook's melodies being at their catchy best (If It's Love, Peyton Place, She Doesn't Have To Shave, Is It Too Late, Melody Motel......all excellent). A definate bona-fide Squeeze cracker!
Jool Holland makes a welcome return to the band on this album - and boy, he's on top ... Read More:

Before Hendrix or Cream or Zeppelin the 'oo were lumping slabs of feedback into the mix and making the charts mid sixties. Add to that some lyrics of alienation and anger, an amphetamine driven drum track (well pretty well anything-he-could-get-his-hands-on driven). Their live performances defined everything that followed pretty well (excluding Val Doonican and Perry Como). This and the Yardbirds were the original British sound track for the swinging psychedelic sixties.
Armenia City in the Sky - complete with groundbreaking backwards guitar before everyone was at it. This is fiece stuff.
