I can respect Robert Plant for his work with Led Zeppelin (nearly 40 years ago) and Alison Krauss is a major talent with the Union Station but this just does not work. The production by T Bone Burnett is good but the material is poor and boring. It neither one thing (Rock) nor another (Country/Bluegrass). Having read the reviews beforehand I borrowed this CD from my library prepared for a probable disappointment and it certainly lived up to that.

I have only recently started listening to The Byrds (over the last year), mainly through the classic remastered reissued albums, and they have become one of my favourite bands. However, I had no previous knowledge of any band members' solo efforts. I was in Borders recently and found this double CD on sale for £4.00. What a bargain, this collection is superb. Everyone should own one!
I prefer the second CD, but only just. Words cannot really describe how good this is. The arrangements, the singing, just sublime. Gene Clark - pure genius. Recommended

My exploration of pre-Eagles country rock was bound to lead me to this CD given the previous reviews. It may be as relevant to music history as everybody says but it probably won't get much repeat play from me. It's burdened with a persistent melancholy that I find too much in contrast to the fun that country rock should be. On the 6 star "The Gilded Palace of Sin" Gram Parsons and his Burrito collaborators sing of dead hippies and burning rain but with a touch of irony and a soulful attitude. To make things worse, the better of the two albums contained here is interspersed with some singles sides that really could have been relegated to the back. For 1969 the Fantastic Expedition is a brilliant production with excellent instrumental work, no doubt about that. ... Read More:
