Actually, I own the Italian edition of the CD, which starts with Monterey set (last 5 numbers of this CD) instead of the Reinessance club (LA) set (everything else).
The great, flexible and very suggestive vocal of Jimmy Witherspoon (Spoon) is in the all-stars jazz company in both sets; the mighty tenor of Ben Webster and sensitive but explosive drumming of Mel Lewis connect the sessions (both concerts were held in 1959). On the Reneissance club set The Spoon is joined by a great youngster Gerry Mulligan, who has once again proved how capable he was of working with older musicians, Jimmy Rowles on piano and Leroy Vinegar on bass and it's quite obvious that both the singer and the players now how to merge jazz and blues.

This is the most essential of what is a tremendous series, covering the period 1942 -1955. This is the year when the pot of black music was truly simmering with ideas, but was still an incredibly well kept secret as far as the white community was concerned. In the UK the exciting developments in black pop music were completely unknown, until 1956. Very few people in Britian will have any of these tracks, unlike the 1955 volume where tracks by Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, the Platters, Bo Diddley etc begin to appear. That is why the 1954 set is so exciting, the music is hot, pop and rock and roll is about to explode into teenage consciousness and massive record sales, but these 1954 songs are so unfamiliar and completely fresh. Two misconceptions ... Read More:

This is by some distance Thunder's finest effort. Just Another Suicide, All I Ever Wanted and It's Another Day are impeccably written, still sound fresh and would do very well in today's market. The production is rocky without being cheesy.
It could be argued that after this they gave up on trying on the quality and being successful and are now releasing album after album of dated riffs and cheesy lyrics to please their fanbase, many of whom didn't like this album. What a shame

well i read the first two reveiws about this band and felt hooked straight away and so went and downloaded a selection of aggrolites. it seems to me that this band are just producing poppy reggae songs and mixed with lively vox . theres also a few covers of early pop songs ( 60s stuff and the like) , if your a reggae dude or dubwise in any way then this is not gonna cut it for you but if you like lively pop ska-ish ,reggae-ish upbeat fun tunes then hey..........look no further.
