This is the most essential of what is a tremendous series, covering the period 1942 -1955. This is the year when the pot of black music was truly simmering with ideas, but was still an incredibly well kept secret as far as the white community was concerned. In the UK the exciting developments in black pop music were completely unknown, until 1956. Very few people in Britian will have any of these tracks, unlike the 1955 volume where tracks by Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, the Platters, Bo Diddley etc begin to appear. That is why the 1954 set is so exciting, the music is hot, pop and rock and roll is about to explode into teenage consciousness and massive record sales, but these 1954 songs are so unfamiliar and completely fresh. Mo Hippa Live

Jon Cleary is a master of New Orleans piano style and here displays it to best effect on a live album recorded in Sydney. The range of music covers Professor Longhair style piano to raw, stripped-back funk and soul. These guys do it so well and the advantage of the live album is that it captures the spontaneousness of the solos rather than getting a sterile studio sound. Ace musicans playing burning music really well - buy it, and if you can, see them.

Dr. John's Gumbo

GUMBO is one of my all-time favourite albums and my favourite in the cannon of my favourite jazz piano player, Dr John.

Back in the 1970s, a pal of mine was a huge Dr John fan and tried very hard to get me enthused about the Voodoo mumblings that made up albums like Gris-Gris and Remedies ... to no avail. Until I heard GUMBO. Though I didn't know it at the time, I was to become a massive fan (via The Blues Brothers) of artists like Junior Wells and the later Atlantic and Stax musicians. What Dr John showed me here was where those musicians took their inspiration from.

I don't think many will argue that Dr John isn't one of the best living jazz pianists we have, and his perky barrel-house style is very much in evidence here. ... Read More:

Dr John was a well known session man in New Orleans long before he hit it big in 1967 with "Gris Gris", the first album to feature his Night Tripper persona. He's had a few attempts at cracking it before then, most notably with the Zu Zu Blues Band, who released material in 1965, only to see it bomb. A lot of the material on this album is sourced from that time, and a great deal of it has appeared in service stations near you, primarily under the title "Zu Zu Man", and also as "Trader John's Crawfish Soiree" or variations thereof.
