Anyone who has loved the music of the Libertines will have quickly learned to respect Carl Barat - unpretentious, genuine and a man of proven integrity and loyalty to his band and the music he loves.

His "Under the Influence" compilation says all this about him. Whilst other music celebrities will scratch around for something obscure in an attempt to be cool and interesting, Barat doesn't need to bother - much as he's never had to bother about being "cool" because he just IS. Here he has done what he always does, stayed true to his beliefs and to himself, and put together some timeless tracks which give a simple message - this is me.

I have to don my "hmmmmm" face for this review I'm afraid.

So, I suppose it's possible to have a "Mod Music" album without the Who or the Small Faces or The Faces, after all this is one such! But when you also leave out the Lambrettas, The Jam, Rod Stewart and Manfred Mann as well, you do start to wonder. The whole thing plays somewhat like a Madness/UB40/The Beat benefit in fact.

The inclusion of sixties rarities like "Rudi's in Love" by the Locomotive and "Seven Days Too Long" by Chuck Wood (incorrectly credited in the plural "Woods" on this one!) - a straight reggae pop song and a 70s Northern Soul classic respectively - just reinforce the idea that this collection was more about what the compiler could get, rather ... On saying that it is very rarely out of my most played - it seems to suit my mood often enough.
