I've just ordered this CD for the third time. The previous two copies eventually suffered the fate that befalls all CDs left lying around in the car. This time I'll back it up!

Mischa Dichter gets mixed reviews for his Liszt, but on this CD it's all superb. Beautiful, crisp finger work, high drama - but never OTT, a lovely mixed selection of pieces. OK - I could quibble and say I'd swap a couple of Hungarian Rhapsodies for the Dante Sonata - but overall this double CD's a must.

Gruberova has, it seems, been attempting with the Japanese Nightingale Classics series to record all the bel canto operas of Donizetti which are 'worth reviving', ie that have at least one famous aria.

Linda is a charming pastoral comedy telling the tale of a simple Swiss family trying to retain the freehold of their farm; Linda is being pursued by the wicked landlord, but is really in love with another; that other is of course someone in disguise, and....

The hit song comes early on in Act I, but the rest of the music is quite enjoyable. Linda's mad scene isn't on a par with Lucia, but Edita fuels it with some ceiling-scraping leaps and runs so that one is left feeling breathless (but at her technique rather than the score).
