The Meters didn't invent funk (that distinction unquestionably goes to James Brown) but they reinvented it to such a degree that they sound utterly unique against virtually any other funk act. Much of the flavour of that reinvention comes from their home town of New Orleans - always a law unto itself musically, and especially rhythmically, the collision of funk and New Orleans rhythms represented by The Meters is a particularly happy one..
This album divides neatly into two parts, split between CD 1 featuring their early recordings for local label Josie from 1968-1971 and CD 2 featuring their subsequent recordings for Reprise and Warner from 1972-1977.
