The Concerto for Four is very late Messiaen and has him thinking back to the work of earlier French masters. The concerto has greater mobility and transparency than other pieces that stand like great trees populated by every shouting bird under the sun. The references to other composers reminded me of Shostakovich and the Fifteenth Symphony. This, combined with the earlier pieces and Messiaen's Mozartian 'smile', make for sunnier listening than usual.
