When it was released, this recording of Turangalila by Rattle received a lot of accolades, but I don't understand why. Maybe there weren't so many recordings to compare as today. As usual, Rattle gives meticulously crafted performance, but fails to deliver enough magnitude and impact this cosmic music calls for. Like so many of his Mahler recordings, the music sounds too perfect, too balanced and too calculated, focussing too much on each moment and detail, and it becomes static as a result. The very tame rendition of the ending climax is the most disappointing thing in this performance. Peter Donohoe's piano playing too lacks enough grandeur and strength to penetrate thick orchestral texture. You can find far more powerful and gripping performance ... Read More:

I can't claim to be a big fan of Messiaen's music, and I came across this Quartet by way of having heard the 3rd movement played by Paul Meyer on a CD of 20th century clarinet solo music (reviewed separately in my list of reviews on Amazon.co.uk). I was so fascinated by the movement that I looked further into the complete quartet, and on balance decided to buy this CD based on the distinguished ensemble and the bargain price.
So it's an added bonus that I found this recording very absorbing and enjoyed it very much. The ensemble plays reflectively and brings a certain immediacy and life to music which could otherwise be interpreted as "difficult" or challenging.
