This is an interesting contrast between two modern composers: while Shostakovich sought for neo-Classicism, Messiaen developed his own style with tone rows and retrogrades... in prison.
Until I met this record, I have not yet confirmed that both "Piano Trio No. 2" by Shostakovich and "Quatuor pour la fin du Temps" by Messiaen are my favourite works of all time. I have records for the same works performed by many great performers, among them include the celebrated Martha Argerich and Daniel Barenboim. Quite frankly, I bought this record for only one reason: Joshua Bell.
There are various highlights of the CD. Firstly, it is the second movement of the "Piano Trio". The technique, the pace of the movement and the coordination ... Read More:

Quatour Pour la Fin Du Temps.. Sadly, in this recording of Messiaens most reknowned work the piano part tends to evoke a rather grim effect, not dissimilar to that of a Victorian Lavatory (acoustically speaking). It seems as though the pianist is playing from a neighbouring room-Far too soft and the emphasis on the sustain pedal, although it is directed throughout the music, is used clumsily here. The intonation of the blend of all instruments is generally quite coarse, and the blend between the clarinet and strings is unfortunately no more enticing-It could be argued that the reason for this is due to the instrumentation and that Messiaen composed this piece as a Prisoner of War, composing specifically for the instrumentalists amongst ...
