I bought this not having heard any Kool G Rap before, but seeing it was made in 1992 - before hip-hop became all bling.click.pop style, I thought I'd risk it. Where to start? Kool G Rap is a great rapper, unafraid to use outrageous lyrics and he sounds like a less right-on Chuck D. The real best part of this record is the beats. Funky deep-fried beats throughout and samples looped and layered one on another make this sound like no other hip hop record. Pretty mesmerising, and loaded with sound effects too so each track is like an adventure. A great and overlooked classic. |
