Mozart once said that Thomas Linley was "a true genius... had he lived he would have been one of the greatest ornaments of the musical world". That is certainly high praise coming from the world's greatest composer. And it is tragic that Linley, who could have championed the cause of English classicism and music in general, was killed in a boating accident without coming near to doing so. But we must not permit the tragic circumstances of his life overshadow the evidence of his genius - the reason for our lamenting him so much - and be contented with the music he was able to compose in his short life - a considerable amount considering he died at the age of 22.

This is the most essential of what is a tremendous series, covering the period 1942 -1955. This is the year when the pot of black music was truly simmering with ideas, but was still an incredibly well kept secret as far as the white community was concerned. In the UK the exciting developments in black pop music were completely unknown, until 1956.
