First things first. The music contained in this boxset is little short of perfect. Hakan Hardenberger must surely be one of the, if not the, finest trumpet players ever.

Next - the boxset. Oh dear, oh dear. Decca have put no effort into this whatsoever, and have taken sparse to a new level. All you get is 5 CDs in BLANK WHITE PAPER sleeves - yep, you heard me - in a cheap cardboard box. That's it,nothing else. There isn't even a proper track listing (I had to obtain that from Amazon's product page), let alone a description of the tracks.

Decca, for £25.99, I at least expect CDs in full colour sleeves, if not proper CD cases, and a comprehensive booklet detailing the tracks, composers and performers in ... Read More:

It is also a good disarmer of fears about Bartok’s music (“pots and pans falling down a chimney”, to quote one friend rendered musophobic) for the uninitiated Bartok listener (e.g., me until a very short time ago). There are great tunes here, beautifully played, and an energy bordering on the diabolical.

Magnificent.
