First three points.

One. This is a reissue of a 1988 recording not a new 2001 release.

Two. If you are looking for the version of the Nunc Dimittis that was the theme tune of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy in 1979 you may be disappointed. It used a treble voice. A counter tenor is used here and the effect is quite different. This piece is also not a good guide to the sound of the whole disc,
as it is the one most conventionally set within the English Choral tradition, whilst the other have a quite different sound (see below)

Three. Choral Works may be a misleading title. All the works here are for one or two voices, never a full choir.

The Penguin guide accords this set a Rosette, and previous reviewers on amazon have been very positive. However, I would counsel caution before buying. I agree with the reviewer who mentions intonation problems with the boys choir. More generally, with the reverberant acoustic and large forces, in many contrapuntal choral passages the different musical lines become obscured and muddied - it becomes impossible to hear even a distinct pitch, let alone words, when there are fast semi-quaver's etc.

Peter Pears, of course, divides tastes - a love or loathe kind of tenor. Personally I'm a fan, and his contribution is strong. The biggest problem with this set is the other solo tenor, Robert Tear. Tear has the worst kind of wobbly wide-vibratoed ... Read More:

With musicians of the calibre of Martin Carthy and John Kirkpatrick it is highly unlikely that the end product will be less than excellent.However, with some ace brass players to augment the guitar/ melodeon of the two principals the resultant music is wonderfully original. How many bands can you think of which can find space for a tenor sackbutt ? The music is drawn from all over the British Isles and the combination of voices and the aforementined instruments proves irresistible.You won't hear anything like it this, or any other,year.

This music is, in my opinion, one of the pinnacles of western culture. In no other era was such beautiful and profound poetry set to equally masterful music. It is like Shakespeare come to musical life, and indeed Dowland was Shakespeare's contemporary and was a high figure of the Elizebethan renaissance.

For the 4 books of songs, the Consort of Musicke's 70s recordings have yet to be surpassed, nor likely will they ever be. There are many possible ways for these songs to be sung and performed, but the Consort captures them all with unerring taste, passion tempered by high dignity. The singing, particularly Emmy Kirkby's and Martyn Hill's is often radiantly beautiful, but David Thomas and John York Skinner's does not slouch either. They get few ... Read More:
