I love this collection of songs. He really has a unique voice full of character, as most would like the blues to be. Sadly not many people have heard of him, and a £28 price tag ain't gonna help.
Unfortunately because of the era (and also recording budget) the sound quality is very thin and weak and doesn't have the desirable rich distorted valve quality that some other blues numbers do from this time.

You might as well buy this as a selection, if you want some later Lightnin' - great value.
I've read some reviews that seem to rate the later Lightnin', after he had been discovered by the 60s blues boom, as less valuable than his earlier, sparser work. I don't see any loss of quality; his occasional electric guitar playing doesn't sound much different from his acoustic, and his licks and timing seem sharper; and the bass, drums and piano all cook with him unfailingly, amounting to something bigger and more value for money, for me, and probably more instantly accessible to modern ears. And what a voice! This is smoky, sweaty, whiskey-soaked, workingman's blues. So what if he only seems to have two tunes, with different words - somehow ... Read More:

The band is called John Gill's Dixieland Serenaders and though the name fairly indicates the lively nature of the music, it does not really reflect the authenticity of the traditional jazz on this CD - it is truly great ! The choice of numbers includes many early standards, and the style of playing is reminiscent of revivalist Lu Watter's Yerba Buena Band with 2 trumpets and itself based on the great King Oliver's line up - traditional jazz lives on.
There are many superb numbers, not only from King Oliver, but also from Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton and more of that era. The CD starts with an exciting approach to "Weather Bird Rag" and goes on to such as "Zulu's Ball", "Alligator Hop" and "Billy ... Read More:
