by: River City People

Release Date July 01, 1991
River City People consisted of two brothers Tim and Paul Speed (guitars and drums respectively)and Dave Snell (bass) who in 1987 were all studying at Liverpool Polytechnic. Vocalist Siobhan Maher had previously worked with Snell in a band called Peep Show and had also achieved some fame as a TV presenter in the mid-eighties. The band's break came in 1989 when they received funding from the pop programme 'The Chart Show' to make a video and were subsequently signed to EMI.

The Complete EMI Sessions 1928 - 1939

Search: Whats Wrong
by: Paul Robeson

Release Date July 21, 2008
Okay, so the title of this review might be considered hyperbolic but, for me, Robeson's voice has a magical quality which at times beggars description. These recordings represent his output in the prewar years; they are a mix of spirituals, show songs, classics, and a couple of poetical recitations. They reflect Robeson the film star, Robeson the champion of Black culture, and Robeson the bourgeoning civil-rights activist.

The quality of the recordings reflects their age but, overall, the reproduction is excellent - wonderful for me since some of them I have on very crackly 78s which, in any event, I haven't played for years.

The 1939 recording of 'Deep River' is peerless.

Overdue, but very welcome.
