Although the title of this CD closely resembles a line from one of Spandau Ballets greatest hits, thats where any resemblance sharply stops. It seems that Americana singer songwriter Jeff Tallmadge has reached his current occupation via a varied and circuitous route having had a number of highly varied and interesting position ranging from janitor and seminary student to Capitol Hill Congressional press secretary and associate major league baseball scout!
Talmadge falls most definitively into the mould of a singer songwriter who describes stories of people and places hes seen and visited, and many derived from his own personal experiences. On first listening this CD feels unremarkable but when you get below the surface of the poetic ... Read More:

This is the only Broonzy album I own, and I can't help thinking there must be better stuff out there. I had previously only heard him playing solo, and I personally think this is where he really shines. On these recordings he tends to sound a little swamped by the band format. He sounds overly conventional, and one can't help wondering how much commercial pressure there was on these recordings. I'm not saying they're bad by any means, there of listenable quality and pleasant enough, but there really is little to distinguish them from many early city blues recording, and I've heard Big Bill sound so much better

Finally! All of Big Bill Broonzy's classic and hugely influential prewar sides gathered together, 128 sides recorded for labels like Paramount, ARC and Perfect Records. The sound is not great, which is to be expected, but it is certainly as good as on any collection of this seminal and highly influential music, which features Big Bill as a solo performer as well as leading various small combos.
Big Bill Broonzy was one of the major links between country blues and the urban Chicago variety, and artists like Memphsi Slim and Muddy Waters recorded entire LPs of his material. And this is certainly no second-rate compilation, in spite of the relatively low price and the cartoonish design of the box...it is a well-annotated, carefully ... Read More:

This is an amazing collection of hand picked performances which will have you raising your eyebrows as you recognise influences from 80 years ago on todays modern sounds. I could wax lyrical about the choice of artists and tracks but prefer to just say BUY IT!!!
There is a big HOWEVER, which I have to add and that is a dissappointment in the packaging and information. I can't fault the music so have had to give a 5 star rating but unfortunately, a person with 20/20 vision would have difficulty reading the track list and there is also a loose leaf track list of which the print is also minute. In addition, where the information in the booklet explains the background to each track, this fails to have the track number next to it. I am not normally ... Read More:
