Search: When You Got A Good Friend
by: Eric Clapton
Release Date March 22, 2004
'Me and Mr Johnson' has some solid playing from EC and his love and mastery of Robert Johnson's musics is pretty evident on this album. I think the reason why this album gets slated as much as it does is because the terrible Simon Climie production relegates it to the 'elevator' music described by other reviewers. The music and playing are pretty good (although without the fire and passion of 'From the Cradle') but the production is yet again flat and uninspiring. When will EC learn everyone hates this style of production and it does nothing for his music? This album is very polished and slick, which detracts from the rawness of the blues played, but there are some good tracks here and it's a good homage from EC of Johnson's amazing playing ... Search: When You Got A Good Friend
by: Gordon Smith
Release Date September 15, 2008
GORDON SMITH is the REAL DEAL.
Described by John Peel as " The foremost white Blues guitarist in the world ", Gordon is also one of the country's greatest Blues vocalists.
His 1968 debut album 'Long Overdue' was produced by Mike Vernon for the legendary Blue Horizon label, and featured members of Fleetwood Mac, including Peter Green. For years this album has been a collector's classic, but it is now it has been re-released by Mike Vernon along with other vintage Blue Horizon recordings.
During the 70's,Gordon was a member of 'The Kevin Coyne Band' with whom he recorded several albums for Virgin, as well as a couple of his own for the Italian label Appaloosa, and in the 90's a solo country Blues album 'Out of the Bottleneck'. ... Read More:

Peter Green has always been one of my favourite guitarists and I could literally listen to his playing all day. This double cd is a real Gem! The first cd is basically his Fleetwood Mac classics and includes a superb instrumental version of "Man Of The World." The second cd consists of some classic Blues and his versions of Robert Johnson's originals are truly wonderful, better than Eric Clapton's versions in my opinion and include some fine accoustic and harp playing. His version of Freddie King's "Going Down" is also well above average.

I regret buying this. Yes, it's very interesting to compare the duplicate versions, especially wondering about the old arguments about the speeding-up (or not) of the original recordings...but now when I come to play this out of simple love for this wonderful music, I'm annoyed at having to skip over the unwanted duplicates, and wish I'd stuck to buying CDs of the original two separate 1961 LP versions. In pretty well every case, I think they got it right, which version to choose etc.
