I have been a Barry Fan for years, and I rate The Last Valley as his best film score. However, this re-make leaves a lot to be desired. If you have never heard the original, then you will enjoy this. but I am totally familiar with the original, and I found this recording dissapointing. The orchestral work is o.k. The original was superb. The choral work is o.k. The original was outstanding. Having searched for the original on C.D. but not found it, I must now somehow make my own from the vinyl The Last Valley (Prague Po, Raine)

Janácek - The Makropulos Case

It is wonderful to have such a fine recording of this opera in the English language. Even though Janacek's music closely reflects the rhythms of the Czech language, there is an immense gain in immediacy in this curious and utterly gripping drama when hearing it in English. And what a piece! Through his monstrous, desiccated yet sympathetic 300 year old heroine, Janacek conveys most powerfully the futility of life without end.
The tempi here tend to be slower than in Mackerras' earlier recording on Decca, which may be partly to do with getting the English words across in the opera house (this is a live recording), but this approach feels absolutely right.
