Tippett: Vocal MusicSearch: Winter by: Various Artists Release Date November 14, 2005 I have chosen to review this set as it would appear to be the only way now left by which to acquire the sublime Byzantium, as performed by Solti, the Chicago Symphony and the majectic Faye Robinson. The first disc comprises Tippett songs which I am in no position to comment on as they are some of the few Tippett items I do not own and know. A situation I will most certainly remedy. The second disc gives us A Child of our Time, probably Tippett's most popular and performed work. Ironically so in my opinion because this is representative of the earliest era of Tippett's career when arguably he had yet to find the utterly distinctive voice and commence the journey to the most refined individuality that would eventually ... Verdi: La TraviataSearch: Winter by: Bavarian State Orchestra Carlos Kleiber Release Date September 13, 2004 Recorded when the cast were at the height of their combined talents, this is a wonderful, heartbreaking recording that will bowl over anyone who enjoys good singing and sincere interpretation. Although the score is not absolutely complete, many traditional cuts are reinstated (the cabalettas for the two Germonts, for example) and it is conducted with a Toscanini - like feverishness by Kleiber. There is more ebb and flow to his reading than in the old recording by the great Italian conductor, and he is more sympathetic to his singers, but he sweeps the listener along with the sheer passion and drama of his conception of the opera: it's like a race against time, and a thrilling ride. However, this re-make leaves a lot to be desired. If you have never heard the original, then you will enjoy this. but I am totally familiar with the original, and I found this recording dissapointing. The orchestral work is o.k. The original was superb. The choral work is o.k. The original was outstanding.
