White Mansions & Jesse JamesSearch: Wish We Were Back In Missouri by: Various Artists Release Date September 15, 1997 This twin CD album, which tells the stories of the American Civil War and Jesse James, is an absolute gem. If you like country music sung by the likes of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Emmylou Harris and Eric Clapton, you will love it. The lyrics are intelligent and thought provoking. The accompanying booklet is well worth a read. Together the two CDs give "the common man's" experience of the American Civil War and its aftermath. In some ways, it's an opera about heroism, injustice and ultimately, tragedy. I bought the vinyl version of the Legend of Jesse James back in 1980 and the music remains as fresh and moving as ever. I cannot recommend this double album highly enough. |
