There's something deeply disturbing about this album, I don't know, maybe it's the fact that within a few minutes we hear a gorgeous string arrangement (you can just imagine the birds tweeting), then straight into a march, then a manic jazz piece! Add to the recipe a big dollop of typical prisoner dialogue and you have this album.

strange? Yes, and its brilliant!

I do own the original issues of these alums, but they never really worked for me, they just seemed thrown together, a collection of music, that's all... ... Read More:

Ear Candy

Ear Candy now dates back some 10 years as the band's 6th studio release from 1996. This album has immediate appeal for both existing fans of the band and others into rock/metal in general.
The album kicks off perfectly with Train with its chugging guitar riff setting the tone for the whole album which has a slightly back to basics feel in places.
Other standout tracks are the lively Sometimes, Box, Mississippi Moon & Lines In The Sand (both led by Ty Tabor), Fathers (a very personal song from Doug P) and the simply excellent Life Going By which is an immense album closer. American Cheese is also worth a mention as a quirky Ty led tune with heavy Beatles influence.

Live All Over the Place

This double album set of the Texan trio collates live performances from over the years . Live songs incorporate everything from 'Visions' on the first album , to 'Black Like Sunday' on their latest studio effort .

They themselves admit that these recordings are 'warts and all' , with no studio overdubs , and the rawness of the songs is all the better for it . There are extended jam sessions on some songs , with Doug Pinnick going into 'Preacher Mode' on others - if you've seen King's X live , you'll know what I mean !

Especially appreciated is a six song acoustic only set at the start of the second CD , which allows all three vocal talents to come more to the fore .

Live All Over the Place

I love Kings X, but have never seen them live (have they ever toured the UK?). Not so keen on Bulbous or Ear Candy but early albums and Ogre Tones are ace.

I thought this album would encapsulate good songs in rocking live environment, but found only a few tracks that got me rocking. Production on some is murky, and the expected live excitement doesn't really seem to kick in very often.

If you are new go back to the first few ablums, or Ogre Tones/Dogman. I think this is more for the diehards, or those who have seen the live show?

Personally I think this is a stellar compilation, filled with top notch music from the 'golden age' of ska.
It's a versatile album: you'll find energetic vocal tunes (including the sparkling 'Arte Bella' by Ken Boothe & Stranger Cole and the early Wailers scorcher 'Put it on') next to poignant instrumentals (like the triumphant 'Freedom Ska' and the beautifully melancholic 'Look away ska' - worth the price of this disc alone). And of course the legendary Skatalites are well represented.
All in all a superb introduction into the world of Studio One Ska.
So - in my humble opinion - if you're looking for a great compilation of vintage ska, you can't go wrong with this one!
