I have to admit to being a little "one eyed" when it comes to reviewing this particular package. Having been blown away by his stunning "Hot August Night" live recording and the equally admirable "Love At The Greek" concert years later, the modern day Diamond is unfortunately a cabaret act if one is to be honest. Just one look at the venues tells you that - two discs cover his Vegas concerts.

Gone is the exciting artist that lit up the 70s, when he actually played his guitar rather than used it as a prop. Bitter anti-Diamond fan? Far from it. I have been a fan for over 25 years, I just don't hide my disappointment like others and pretend he is still the performer he was. I can accept that his energy may wane with age but I cannot ... You've probably dismissed Diamond as music your mum listens to. You're wrong to think this because you'll be missing some great pompous rock songs. Some of it's cheesy, but a lot of what is on this best of is genuinely good stuff.

His name looks like an anomaly on my MP3 player's artist list. The thing is, I'm not ashamed as I love these big over the top (orchestra included on everything) songs. And you don't have to worry about good taste getting in the way of your listening experience.

Some of these songs even rock in their own way. Though it's best to skip the Streisand duet. And Brooklyn Road and Morningside don't stand up after a few listens. Otherwise it's great. And the live tracks are very energetic - I ... Read More:

Yes, yes I know - the last time Neil Diamond recorded an album full of ballads it wasn't exactly a classic. That was called Heartlight and it bombed. This time he's really cracked it and has recorded one hell of a record. Again it's almost completely dedicated to ballads but wow, they are quite something! The tracks Midnight Dream and My Special Someone are quite astounding and whether you are a Diamond fan or even if you've never bought one of his discs before, do yourself a favour and buy this one. Wonderful, absolutely wonderful!

A 2 CD set with a good selection of Neil's hits from over the years. For the fans who thought they had everything there is a section thrown in to tempt them as well - from his present tour set (2001/2002) Neil does great live versions of Captain Sunshine, He Aint Heavy and a medley of Yes I Will/Lady Magdalene (with Neil on piano). Definitely something for everybody here.
