Smokey Robinson was once described by Bob Dylan as "the greatest living poet". That is certainly nothing of an understatement and Smokey Robinson was one of the most richly talented singer/songwriter/producers at Tamla Motown Records.

Smokey Robinson gave Berry Gordy the initial ammunition for forming Tamla Motown Records and was also partly responsible for bringing the great Diana Ross to his attention, who was a close friend of Smokey's and indeed Smokey ended up having a short-lived affair with Diana, even though he was married to Claudette Robinson at the time. Berry Gordy expressed an interest in one of his songs and before long, a creative bond was forged that would change the face of music between blacks and whites.

Meet The Temptations and The Temptations Sing Smokey were the first two albums to be released by the Temptations, and were released in April 1964 and February 1965 (both 1965 in the UK). Their first single as the Temptations had come out on Motown's Miracle label in 1961, but their first Top Twenty hit had been seventh single The Way You Do The Things You Do/Just Let Me Know early in 1964, presumably triggering the putting together of Meet The Temptations.

Until the release of this Anthology, Brenda Holloway's three years as a recording artist at Motown were best represented by the 50-minute compilation Greatest Hits And Rare Classics, which scarcely did justice to one of their finest singers, especially since it only included three selections that were solely album tracks. The Motown Anthology handsomely addresses this by including her sole album in full, and over its two and a quarter hours gathers together pretty much everything that was released at the time and quite a lot that was not, all laid out in a logical and clear fashion.

In this album the one big hit above returns and is supplemented with some classic Smokey toones from The Miracles. David Ruffin makes his debut here with the classic "My Girl" hit single, "Who`s Loving You," and "It`s Growing" which tend to stand out in the album.

However the true range of the Temptations is shown here as the lead changes from David Ruffin to Paul Williams and Eddie Kendricks on some of the other songs which are powerful emotional love songs, which only Smokey could write.
