The Glenn Miller Story [1953]

starring: James Stewart, June Allyson, Harry Morgan, Charles Drake, George Tobias
directed by: Anthony Mann

Release Date July 01, 1999
I first saw this film on TV 20 years ago and am very pleased that it has come out in a crisp DVD version. James Stewart gives a very watchable portrayal of the struggle and triumph of the famous American musician, while June Allyson gives a moving performance that shows that her star on the Walk of Fame is richly merited. The film contains some of Miller's most famous compositions like In the Mood - the climax of this in the film against the background of a German air raid is heartening as well as causing the audience within the film to cheer and applaud. A very enjoyable way to spend the afternoon (or later).
Highly recommended.

High Noon [1952]

starring: Gary Cooper, Grace Kelly, Thomas Mitchell, Lloyd Bridges, Katy Jurado
directed by: Fred Zinnemann

Release Date November 10, 1997
What can be said about the quintessential template for an intruiging plot. Based on a real-time drame, this film is every bit as good as when I saw it 45 years ago.

You could literally take this plot and place the reaction of the various players into any element of life, be it in an office, a sporting event or even a western.

Incredibly gripping, when friends turn against Kane for various reasons, turning reasonable people ino villains, but what about Kane himself? Why should people support his decision when he is potentially leading everyone down a dangerous path.

Absolutely brilliant and one to watch. Forget that it is old, in monochrome and has a poor souldtrack. Examine a pice of film-making at ... Read More:

State Fair [1945]

starring: Jeanne Crain, Dana Andrews, Dick Haymes, Vivian Blaine, Charles Winninger
directed by: Walter Lang

Release Date March 13, 2000
I bought this video for my grandparents who always said it was their favourite film. They asked me to sit and watch it with them (and to be honest, I couldn't muster up much enthusiasm).
But I loved it. It was wholesome family viewing and I have watched it a few times since.
And I am a 30 year old fun loving girl! So a must-see for all ages.

Gypsy [1962]

starring: Rosalind Russell, Natalie Wood, Karl Malden, Paul Wallace, Betty Bruce
directed by: Mervyn LeRoy

Release Date March 27, 2000
Rosalind Russell takes on the roles of one of the most famous stage mothers - Rose Hovick. Rose missed her chances of a career in showbusiness and on realising her daughter June's talent she decides to live her dream through her daughters. June is a very able singer, dancer and actress but her older sister Rose Louise is forced to live in her shadow "until we find out what she does best" as Mame Rose puts it. The years roll by and Mame Rose now has Herbie - a former agent who becomes an agent again - for the act thinking Mame Rose will marry him. June gets fed up of acting cute likeable and younger than she is and elopes to wed. Mama Rose is furious at the news of June's departure and channels her rage into trying to get Rose Louise to take over. This is fine for ... Read More:

Hawk The Slayer [1980]

starring: Jack Palance, John Terry, Bernard Bresslaw, Ray Charleson, Peter O'Farrell
directed by: Terry Marcel

Release Date April 10, 2000
I remember this film from when I was a kid. IT IS GENIUS!!!!!

The all time great Bernard Breslaw as the giant/barbarian and the perpetually evil Jack Palance as the evil VOLTAN, Hawk's older brother... with a moody elf called CROW. There is even a scene where the magic special effect is silly string. Can you really ask for more from an early 80s sci-fi film? There is the standard witty banter between characters and the evil is the most evil of evil.

This film is a must for those who grew up in the 80s and those who need to know what little we had to get us through.

I also recommend KRULL, FLASH GORDON & LABYRINTH

Digby - The Biggest Dog In The World [1973]

starring: Jim Dale, Spike Milligan, Angela Douglas, John Bluthal, Norman Rossington
directed by: Joseph McGrath

Release Date August 14, 2000
This is the greatest film ever made about an overgrown dog. Starring Jim Dale and Spike Milligan and a giant dog called Digby this is must see entertainment for all the family. I only hope this gets a DVD release soon with some special features. I for one would love to know where they found a dog big enough to play the part of Digby!!! Great fun for all the family.

The Shootist [1976]

starring: John Wayne, Lauren Bacall, Ron Howard, James Stewart, Richard Boone
directed by: Don Siegel

Release Date January 01, 1996
All I have got to say is that John Wayne redeems himself in this, his final movie. I got so disillusioned with him in True Grit, Rooster Cockburn and Brannigan that I had to make a hard decision about whether I should watch this film at all. I made the right decision. I consider myself an aficianado of the genre, and this Western was a Western to end all Westerns. John Wayne knew it and he put every last drop of his being into it. Sadly, very few notable Westerns were made subsequent to this apart from Tom Horn.

All wonderful stuff.

.

Bend Of The River [1952]

starring: James Stewart, Rock Hudson, Arthur Kennedy, Julie Adams, Lori Nelson
directed by: Anthony Mann

Release Date February 07, 2000
Bend of the River is in many ways Anthony Mann's `nicest' Western, but underneath the gorgeous Technicolor location work there's a darker side to Stewart's border raider desperate to reform and his relationship with friendly enemy Arthur Kennedy that threatens fireworks to come - and when they do, in the last 20 minutes, there's no problem in believing the depth of Stewart's rage or the relentlessness of his pursuit. Shot on many of the same locations as the even darker The Far Country, it's still terrific entertainment. Stepinfetchit's role is a little uncomfortable, but compared to the humiliation inflicted upon him in other pictures he's allowed a bit more dignity here than usual, closer to Hank Worden's Old Mose Harper in The Searchers than the racial stereotypes other directors ... Deadly Weapons [1973]

starring: Chesty Morgan, Harry Reems, Richard Towers, Saul Meth, Phillip Stahl
directed by: Doris Wishman

Release Date February 02, 1998
The unbelievable Chesty Morgan displays her assets to their full advantage. This is a totally over the top movie which is so bad it became an instant classic turkey. The term "you'll have someones eye out with those" could have been made for this movie. Be warned this movie could seriously harm your sex life. This is a great film for those bored with explosions and fancy special effects. Believe it or not the "weapons" scenes did NOT contain special effect. They are real!!!!!!
