With the current remake of Neil Simon's 'The Goodbye Girl' showing on television at the moment, it reminded me of this original film production, one of the better films from the 1970s, and one of the better films to derive from a Broadway play to keep much of the same character as the play. This film won numerous awards: Best Actor Oscar/Best Actor Golden Globe/Best Actor BAFTA for Richard Dreyfus; Best Picture Golden Globe; Best Actress Golden Globe/Best Actress Oscar Nomination for Marsha Mason; Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nomination for Quinn Cummings; Best Writing Oscar Nomination for Neil Simon, and the list goes on...
Neil Simon's play is dialogue driven rather than action-driven; this sometimes means the kiss of death for ... Read More:

Drop dead fred is an absolutly fantastic film. I can't even remember how i heard about it - i was born a year after it was even released - but whatever it was that sparked an interest only happened recently. I read lots of reveiws without having seen more than half anf hour of the film and found them all to be dissapointing, all pointing out the flaws and negatives - which, having bought it and now looking back, i cant seem to find in this film.
The hilarious portrayal of Fred by Rik Mayall was fantastic - both brilliantly funny and also amazingly touching when it's needed. Pheobe Cates hits the character of Lizzie perfectly and just brings the tone of the film into something great. And you really have to have a respect for any actor ... Read More:

These guys should be arrested. This (the first one) is arguably the funniest film ever made about life at the wackiest country club in the good old U S of A. From a golden age of situation comedy, Chase and Dangerfield storm the bastille of upper class american elitism with a comedy cavalcade unsurpassed by any of its contemporaries. Caddyshack could only be better if Chevy Chase was in it. What, Chevy Chase IS in it! It simply couldn't be better. Genius. As Dangerfield puts it in the last line of the film. 'Hey everybody, we're all gonna get laid! '

This is a must-see. Although I usually wouldn't watch army films, I made a big exception because of Eastwood - and was pleasantly surprised. A very funny due to Eastwood's wonderfully dry humor!

a truly awful film watched it on the strengh of Depp and Walken, what a mistake, a ridiculous story line, over the top acting from Walken and typical Holywood ending so predictable. Speaks volumes for a film when the best lines went to a 4 yr old kid, avoid this film like the plague.

This is not a bad film, but it's no classic either. It has some funny moments but overall it's a bit to predictable. I'm quite a fan of films where numerous characters each with their own motives end up crossing paths along the way with the others. This does happen in this but once it does that's it, only really happens once. It reminded me of a similar film I saw years ago and forgot the name of, which is much better and I thought this might be it.....but sadly not. Worth a look and stars the lovely Terri Hatcher and Charlize Theron. I just feel the plot could have been better.
