Why this film has had so many negative comments is for me amazing. The stars acting is super. The plot really good and the twist is great.

I recorded this from the tv the other night as I just knew that it would be great to watch again. There's something about the gritty greyness of sixties London that draws you right into this movie. There's no glamour here, except for one of the female characters seduced by Palmer, and a lot of the action takes place in rather bleak, uninteresting rooms and places somewhere in the capital; but the film is loaded with atmosphere. Entirely unlike and so much better than James Bond. Michael Caine's Palmer is dead straight, but not without moments of humour; he's surprisingly sophisticated, but not preposterously so, and splendidly insolent to his superiors, the characters played by Nigel Green and Guy Doleman, rather suave, upper-class, ex-army types involved in the ... A lovely film. Michael Caine does a wonderful job playing the self-destructive but intelligent and warmhearted Dr Frank Bryant, and Julie Walters immerses herself in the character of Rita, a lively and witty hairdresser who decides to enroll in an open University course. The script is perfect, making for a touching film full of insights into human relationships, hopes and desires.
As an aside, for anyone familiar with Dublin, the film was shot in the city, mostly in Trinity College, which is fun to see as it was in the 80s, and works as a perfect setting for the film.

Dr. Watson has a problem. He's always been the brains behind Sherlock Holmes, a fictional character he dreamed up as cover for the cases he has solved. He even hired a third-rate ham actor, Reginald Kincaid, to impersonate Holmes. But now he's fed up with the fatuous dimwit Kincaid whom everyone is fascinated by and who seems to believe his own notices. He longs to be known as John Watson, Crime Doctor, and to receive the recognition due him for his amazing deductive powers.
That's the set up, and it's a funny one, especially with two first-rate actors as Ben Kingsley playing Watson and Michael Caine playing Kincaid. Watson finally boots out Kincaid and decides to solve a case as himself...but no one is prepared to take Dr. Watson seriously as a detective, even ... Read More:

This film is a fantastic homage to all things british (with the exception of Sylvester Stallone). As I slowly replace my entire video collection on DVD, it saddens me that this classic is not yet available. When you consider the total dross that has found it's way on to DVD, it is quite tragic that this film hasn't made it yet!
