Jeremiah Johnson [1972]

starring: Robert Redford, Will Geer, Delle Bolton, Josh Albee, Joaquín Martínez
directed by: Sydney Pollack

Release Date April 27, 1998
A much younger Robert Redford, portraing a scarred veteran(JEREMIAH JOHNSON)of the civil war in America, disillusioned by the experience of that war, who removes himself from that society and starts off to begin his new clean life, never having had the experience but willing to start again in the craddle of The Rocky Mountains.

The films' lyrics are to be paid attention to, for they relate to what the scenes themselves are relaying back to the eyes. Providing the viewer with a balance of stunning visual and audio story telling(I can't remember the last film I saw that made use of this double impact in such a subtle manner).

Few Westerns have covered the lives of that hardy breed, known as Mountain Men as is depicted ... Read More:

Mandingo [1975]

starring: James Mason, Susan George, Perry King, Richard Ward, Brenda Sykes
directed by: Richard Fleischer

Release Date May 23, 1994
"The wife of a plantation and slave owner is jealous of her husband's extra-marital affairs with a slave woman named Ellen, so she seduces and becomes pregnant by a slave named Mede. But her husband isn't too happy about that.." A simplistic quote about a this 'lurid historical drama.' This a brutal piece of film work. Sometimes it's quaint in it's portrayal of the deep south but, I have no doubt that it shows the worst kind of treatment of one human to another and the true brutalising nature of slavery. I saw it when it first came out and it's abiity to shock hasn't waned.

The Goodbye Girl [1977]

starring: Richard Dreyfuss, Marsha Mason, Quinn Cummings, Paul Benedict, Barbara Rhoades
directed by: Herbert Ross

Release Date June 06, 1994
With the current remake of Neil Simon's 'The Goodbye Girl' showing on television at the moment, it reminded me of this original film production, one of the better films from the 1970s, and one of the better films to derive from a Broadway play to keep much of the same character as the play. This film won numerous awards: Best Actor Oscar/Best Actor Golden Globe/Best Actor BAFTA for Richard Dreyfus; Best Picture Golden Globe; Best Actress Golden Globe/Best Actress Oscar Nomination for Marsha Mason; Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nomination for Quinn Cummings; Best Writing Oscar Nomination for Neil Simon, and the list goes on...

Neil Simon's play is dialogue driven rather than action-driven; this sometimes means the kiss of death for film, but in ... Read More:

Double Team [1997]

starring: Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dennis Rodman, Mickey Rourke, Paul Freeman, Natacha Lindinger
directed by: Hark Tsui

Release Date July 01, 2002
I don't know what the deal is with the other user reviews of this Tsui Hark/Van Damme masterpiece - Double Team is perhaps one of the best films to have been released during the whole of the 90s and should be considered a classic movie, definitely not as the 'worst film of 1997' as one ill-informed critic stated.

The strengths and innovations of Double Team are nearly too many to list but amongst the most significant achievements that seem to have been overlooked by the other reviewers are -
* Acting - We all know Van Damme is an unimpeachable actor but who would have known Dennis Rodman could have made the transition from athlete to film star? I'm surprised he wasn't nominated for an Oscar for his excellent, moving performance
* Script ... Read More:

The Man With Two Brains [1983]

starring: Steve Martin, Kathleen Turner, David Warner, Paul Benedict, Richard Brestoff
directed by: Carl Reiner

Release Date May 24, 1999
Dr. Michael Hfuhruhurr (Steve Martin) has a problem choosing between brain waves, Anne Uumellmahaye (Sissy Spacek), and "Body Heat", Dolores Benedict (Kathleen Turner). The whole premise is can love be found in a bottle.
I thought `The jerk' was bad until I saw this movie, both mysteriously directed by Carl Reiner. All he does is make faces with no real acting or thought behind them. A few faces are o.k. but over an over of watching grins and grimaces can get monotonous. I almost stopped watching Steve martin that is capable of making good movies like "House Sitter" (1992) with Goldie Hawn.

I'm pretty sure the last time I saw this film I must have been less than 6 years old, and now over 13 years later, I caught this film on TV and decided to re-visit the family that, I have been told, as a kid I not only adored watching on film but on the cartoon tv series too. Well, what can I say - I'm sure this stuff must have had some sort of diverse effect on my mental well-being as a child, and I can say honestly had an effect on my sense of humour - I find this kind of stuff hilarious.

Don't get me wrong, this film isn't great by any stretch of the immagination. The plot is horrifically predictable, the film just isn't very exciting, never seeming to go anywhere, never raising my excitement or getting me personally involved. But it is funny - full of dark, ... Read More:

Crossfire [1947]

starring: Robert Young, Robert Mitchum, Robert Ryan, Gloria Grahame, Paul Kelly
directed by: Edward Dmytryk

Release Date August 10, 1998
World War II is over and the soldiers are returning home. However home as a source of comfort has been abandoned. They have returned to a dark, shady, and even seedy reality, an element of the film that is masterfully illustrated through its use of cinematography and mise en scene. America's colour has drained away as we watch the story unravel in black and white. It is for this reason, as well as the murder mystery storyline, that the film is classed as being a Film Noir.

A man is sitting in a bar having a drink when he strikes up a conversation with the soldiers next to him. He soon invites them back to his house for a nightcap. Upon arriving at his home the man is killed. Why? Because he is Jewish. An investigation into his death ensues. The 3 soldiers he ... Read More:

Out Of The Past [1947]

starring: Robert Mitchum, Jane Greer, Kirk Douglas, Rhonda Fleming, Richard Webb
directed by: Jacques Tourneur

Release Date August 10, 1998
Robert Mitchum stars in "Out of the Past" as Jeff Bailey. As the film opens, he is the owner of a small town gas station; he's romancing a beautiful girl (Virginia Huston) and his life seems idyllic. However, a stranger arrives looking for Bailey, and everything changes irrevocably. The story is told partially in flashback - enumerating his past with a cutthroat gangster (Kirk Douglas) and a mysterious moll (Jane Greer) - and partially in the present as his past ensnares him into a complicated morass of murder and revenge.

"Out of the Past" is a quintessential 1940s film noir, right up there with "Double Indemnity" and "The Maltese Falcon," although it's arguably not as well known as those classics. The script is whip-smart and filled with brilliant dialogue - a character ... Read More:
