A well written and well produced story, this boasts one of Peter Davison's finest ever portrayals of the Doctor. here is is strong, domineering, quirky, eccentric, funny and manipulative in turns, commanding the screen and dealing with human authorities and nasty, scheming alien creatures with equal amounts of authority. Anyone who thinks davsion is not one of the best Doctors needs look no further than this story to see the emergence of a giant, ready to become an unsurpassed legend just two stories later as he visits a set of titular Caves! Watch it and savour it, it is one of the finest! The dialog alone is a treat to ears! Watch it!

The pilot episode is interesting if little else, but inside the spaceship / the edge of destruction (whichever title you prefer) gives us the first real chance to see the original TARDIS crew as characters in their own right, instead of just Dalek-chasers. Yes the Daleks made Dr. Who a household name, but does anyone really believe the series would have lasted so long without stories of this calibre? True sci-fi, real characters and not a BEM to be seen.

With over 150 stories broadcast, opinion is often divided as to which are the best and worst Doctor Who stories. Ofcourse the usual level of consensus, will see Caves of Androzani, somewhere near the top, and Timelash,Time Flight, and Time And The Rani, at the opposite end. But then in the middle you get stories such as Seeds of Death, Ambassadors of Death, and The Planet of Fire, which people seem to give less attention too, they are simply seen as ok. I think Planet of Fire perhaps deserves a little more recognition. In the documentary accompanying The Leisure Hive, reference is made to the producer John Nathan Turner favouring style over storyline, certainly in Planet of Fire, the fantastic location of Lanzorate, does help distract from a rather ... I am going to be mildly controversial here and support this DOCTOR WHO release! As a long-term fan I am naturally nostalgic and wear 'rose-tinted spectacles' whenever watching Dctor Who; what genuine fanboy wouldn't? Tom Baker was my first (and favourite) Doctor and Peter Davison comes second - mainly due to his tenure being during my adolescent and formative years. I remember both of these stories clearly and fondly: Black Orchid is one of the best Doctor Who stories ever realised on TV - mainly because it's so cosy and redolent of the kind of fictional England that only ever exists on TV, (think Midsomer Murders, Poirot et al). Although, as often stated, the plot is fairly mundane, it is a lot of fun - not one but TWO foxy Nyssas, a marginalised Tegan, ... Read More:

After reading some of the reviews on this site I wasn't too sure about purchasing this title but I am pleased I did! This has to be one of the very best Doctor Who stories ever! Fantastic acting and direction make this a must for any fan. The twists and turns in the story and the shocking ending are superbly handled and I would recommend this to anyone, even if you are not a regular viewer. Now if only the BBC still made quality programmes like this...

This was one of the first Doctor Who stories I ever wached and it had me hooked ever since. The Daleks, and darkness of the story and also the presence of the unexpected to happen make this one of the greatest Doctor Who stories of all time. Its a shame the so called 'new series' of Doctor Who could take this as example of a brilliant plot and stunning special effects considering how under funded the show was. No new Doctor Who comes close to this even with the amount of money they have now to make a good Who story they don't realise that the Doctor is not human, he is origonal, witty, funny and never lets anyone get emotionally involved with him. Which is what the new series lacks in. You only have to look at the poor attempt of the Doctor's new costume to see that the ... Read More:

Rex Fortescue is out of character as he arrives at is office. You immediately know something is wrong because this is England and Rex has ordered his tea much too early. Yep mean old nasty Rex is found dead. Thorough detectives have determined that there was some mysterious grain in his pocket. If you remember the nursery rime you can follow the story. So how does Jane become involved? She trained the maid and is afraid for her safety. Naturally at several places in the mystery Miss Marple (Joan Hickson) points out the obvious to Det. Sergeant Hay (Jon Glover) who realizes and corrects the error of not listening to her.
There is only one repugnant scene where you have to watch Rex eat. Other than that it is a thoroughly enjoyable mystery.
