I first watched this film on its cinema release in the U.K. I loved it then and still do today. My tape version has seen better days so I splashed out on the dvd and I am not sorry. (dvd`s in Africa are very expensive compared to the U.K.)Shirley MacLaine is superb and there could not have been a better choice to take the lead role. Supporting actors Stubby Kay, Ricardo Montalban and Sammy Davis Jnr add to the quality of the production and Chita Rivera is brilliant. The dvd offers an alternate ending but I must confess that I have never watched it.

This is an expertly made film from 1949 by (D) William A Wellman and (S/P)Robert Pirosh which has the feeling of a fly on the wall News Reel. It shows the Americans inabillity to give their enemy any respect in their combat skills and determination. It also shows that if the German Army had the resourses that the Allieds had they would not have lost that battle. It is equal if not superior to the 1970's version with Robert Shaw to name my best actor in the version by Ken Annakin & Axel Anderson. If you watch both one after the other you might just get a better vision of that battle. I have read the reviews about John Fords 'Cheyenne Autumn'. John Ford tried in this film I believe to highlight the truth about the american indians,the true native americans, not the different cultures who claimed to be americans. He tried to highlight the plight of the native americans and how they were forced from their native lands onto reservations where nothing except weeds would grow. They couldn't hunt buffalo because they like the indians had been hunted and killed almost to the point of extinction.In the 60's when the film had been made all the news had been about the civil rights movement and the rights of the black american citizens.
