James And The Giant Peach [1996]

starring: Paul Terry, Joanna Lumley, Pete Postlethwaite, Simon Callow, Richard Dreyfuss
directed by: Henry Selick

Release Date October 01, 1999
Watched this a few years back but couldn't get on with the animation style. It was bought as a present for my 4yo who loves it. On re-watching I didn't have the same animation prejudice simply because Tim Burton has made it more 'acceptable'. Shallow of me I know but there you go.
The Aunts are fantastic in the 'real-life' section although I couldn't get on with the boy. Pete Postlethwaite still gives me the creeps (although that's from the Sharpe TV series rather than this film).
In the animated section the bugs are all pretty good and the boy gets better.
The songs are OK but I didn't find them particularly catchy.

A composer/musician turns teacher and touches the lives of 3 decades of High School students. A moving film that will reduce you to tears at the end when he realises that his work, love and efforts have not been in vain. Richard Dreyfuss is excellent and the music score takes you effortlessly from one school year to the next.

Rudolph And The Island Of The Misfit Toys [2001]

starring: Richard Dreyfuss, Jamie Lee Curtis, Rick Moranis, Kathleen Barr, Scott McNeil
directed by: Bill Kowalchuk

Release Date November 12, 2001
If I am honest I am not sure who prefers this film, my 3 year old or me!! Admittedly it is not the best animation, but fans of the original Misfit Toys movie will not be disappointed. It brings back all of the main characters for another adventure. It is just the sort of film to get you into the Christmas spirit and kids should love it.

Jaws [1976]

starring: Steven Spielberg|Roy Scheider|Robert Shaw|Richard Dreyfuss

Release Date February 03, 2003
Full tilt Spielberg! The man certainly introduced himself to the world with a bang with this piece of brilliance. It is so cinematically compelling, most people must have thought 'Where on Earth did this guy come from?' when seeing it on its release. The man (like his style or not) is simply a creative genius, his command of the screen all the time with visually compelling scenes is almost out of this world. He makes every movie flow with action, and this masterpiece flows quite nicely, especially once he gets us out on the big water. Yes he can definitely be accused of being corny, even perhaps cartoon like in his film making at times, but boy, does he entertain.

The second half of this great film is one of the best continuous pieces ... Read More:

The Goodbye Girl [1977]

starring: Richard Dreyfuss, Marsha Mason, Quinn Cummings, Paul Benedict, Barbara Rhoades
directed by: Herbert Ross

Release Date June 06, 1994
With the current remake of Neil Simon's 'The Goodbye Girl' showing on television at the moment, it reminded me of this original film production, one of the better films from the 1970s, and one of the better films to derive from a Broadway play to keep much of the same character as the play. This film won numerous awards: Best Actor Oscar/Best Actor Golden Globe/Best Actor BAFTA for Richard Dreyfus; Best Picture Golden Globe; Best Actress Golden Globe/Best Actress Oscar Nomination for Marsha Mason; Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nomination for Quinn Cummings; Best Writing Oscar Nomination for Neil Simon, and the list goes on...

Neil Simon's play is dialogue driven rather than action-driven; this sometimes means the kiss of death for film, but in this ... Read More:

Stakeout [1988]

starring: Richard Dreyfuss, Emilio Estevez, Madeleine Stowe, Aidan Quinn, Dan Lauria
directed by: John Badham

Release Date February 03, 2003
Richard Dreyfuss (Close encounters of the third kind) teams up with Emilio Estevez (The Breakfast Club) in this quirky enjoyable buddy crime comedy about two guys who go on a stakeout in a hope to try and track down a criminal, but a twist is in store as one falls for the girl who they are spying on.

Filled with many clichés, stakeout is able to grind out an enjoyable comedy through an intriguing front duo of Estevez and Dreyfuss. Support is given through Madeleine Stowe in a good but stereotypical role. The acting is good fun comedy nature with very good catchphrases and some physical humour to justify the genre. Some very bizarre humour had me scratching my head but most is fun and laidback.

The plot is consistent with jokes at every ... Read More:

Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead [1990] [1991]

starring: Gary Oldman, Tim Roth, Richard Dreyfuss, Iain Glen, Ian Richardson

Release Date January 07, 2000
This play is a myth in Shakespearean theater, maybe even a cult. When the play came out in 1967 it was acclaimed as a postmodern rewriting of our vision of the world. A tragedy like Hamlet's is here entirely captured through the eyes of the two secondary characters in the play, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Finally someone was looking at great dramatic historical events from the point of view of two insignificant witnesses, maybe even not witnesses, just people there unwilling and un-chosen, just there by accident or opportunism. They look and understand nothing. They feel something is hidden from them but they do not know what. They capture glimpses and tidbits here and there from behind a window or through a closed door and the plot is slowly reconstructed out of shape ... Read More:
