now it may be a classic, but i'm afraid i was really disappointed with this film. my 5 yr old was frankly bored watching this, it was very slow to get moving. the story line was not what i was expecting. the jimmney cricket / conscience was to abstract for him to understand in the way it was presented. and there was a terrible bit later on with pinnochio getting drunk and smoking cigars. that bit raised a few tricky questions.

what i had expected the main story line to be - pinnochio's nose growing long when he lied, occured only once for about 20 seconds in the middle of the film and never again.

we will not be watching this one again
sadly not enjoyable or educational

This is the best film ever but try as I might I can not get hold of it for region 2. If anyone knows where or how I can find this film to play on my DVD player, here in England, I would be grateful.
Same goes for "My Beautiful Son" AKA "Strange Relations" in the American market.

It was in Mr. Deeds Goes to Town that Frank Capra perfected the blend of comedy and social commentary that would become his trademark. The screwball comedy was graceful rather than frantic and the social elements of Robert Riskin's fine screenplay are handled in an even-handed manner that earned Capra the second of his three Acadamy Awards for Best Director. Both Gary Cooper as the tuba playing no nonsense Longfellow Deeds and Jean Arthur as the reporter who exploits him until she falls for his goodness are wonderful in this true Capra classic.

Bringing Up Baby [1938]

I have seen this many times but the humour never wears off. Possibly the most effective pairing of Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn (I have not seen all of their films together). Hepburn is wonderfully eccentric as Susan Vance and Grant's Dr. David Huxley is ever so funny. Even when I am not watching, the thought of him in those clothes (after Susan takes away his normal ones) makes me laugh. It is impossible to choose a favourite scene as they are all brilliant, whether at the golf course, hotel, country house, etc. The film represents the genre at its best and jokes are wittily scripted, unlike modern day comedies that more often than not, use sex, bodily functions and strong language to supply the laughs.
