I don't care if these guys are commercial because wvwn the most underground of Hip Hop have to become commercial to make their $$$ so they are all just wannabe gangbangers.

Buhloone Mindstate

Just dug this out after too long. This is probably my favourite De La Soul album, now that I've grown up. I play 3 feet when the kids are about and of course they love it but this is just an absolute gem. It hasn't aged at all probably due to the jazz samples that pervade the mix. The soul within the songs, alongside the usual bufoonery (or should that be buhloonery?), is really touching. There's a real sense that they were on a very philosophical journey with this album but it doesn't feel introverted, there are still beats so phat they need a crane to get them out the house. Even the more, spiritually lightweight tracks make perfect sense and this album continues to pull you in. It feels sparse without ever feeling empty. Genius

Stakes Is High

Great to see so many other reviewers echoing what I'm feeling about this record - its absolute quality!

Love the flow of it, every track is focussed and is a real pleasure to listen to - whilst most people have got/ heard 3 Feet High (and don't get me wrong it's a great album), far less people have heard Stakes is High and its a shame because it shows how much De La Have evolved as a group...

If you don't have it - buy it now! Then drop a review on Amazon telling everyone else how great it is!

The Grind Date

Aside from rendering the average uncultured Hip-hop fan speechless (or confused) with metaphors and rhymes that dwarf the mental ages of the average "I have mo' money" sell-out - (50 cent, perhaps); this album also offers a mixed bag of clever beats: Shoomp, The Future and The Grind Date just a few. This truly is a relatively unheard jewel, their quiet success is only proof that their witty and original sound only works with the more thoughtful listener. Forget any magic numbers, De La better themselves with each new album.

One of the first "real" hip hop albums I listened to and it continues to sound fresh after all these years. They took everything great about their debut and maximised it; throwing in experimental touches and a subtle use of live instrumentation into the mix, creating what is, in my humble opinion, the greatest jazz-rap album we'll ever hear. Q-Tip and Phife aren't the greatest rappers, but they sound so suitably relaxed and eloquent over the beats that it's easy to understand their lofty status in the world of hip hop. Everything works on The Low End Theory and there's never been a more perfectly suitable closer than "Scenario", the greatest posse cut of all time. this is one of the best hip hop albums ever.black sheep are one of the best rap groups of all time.each track is something fresh and new.i will never get bored of listening to this album.i cant say my favourite track on this album cause they all are so good.if you are a hip hop fan i recommend you should buy this.

Midnight Marauders

For me, this is Tribe's masterpiece... an album of such pure quality that is dazzles to this day. In fact, in comparison to the bulk of today's heavily marketed, over-produced, incoherent Hip Hop albums, it deserves a 6th star. It's takes the form of a trip through after-hours New York, with a computerised voice as your tour guide. The basslines on this album are amazing, and perhaps this album should have been called the Low End Theory Part 2, as ATCQ revisit the formula of samples and snares. The music influences as always, veer from Jazz to Soul, but always remain resolutely Hip Hop and resolutely fresh. Art Official Intelligence 2: Bionix [Better Stronger Faster]

Well, after following the magic number since 1989 every new De La Soul album is an event that I always look forward to. However, since 'Stakes Is High' I seem to go through the same routine. I listen to the new album once and think 'the've frikkin lost it this time, never again' but a month, a few months or a year later I think - 'no, can't have been that bad'. I play the album again and think 'why the hell did I hate this?'. I have figured it out, De La remain ahead of the Hip Hop game, every time, guarenteed.

This album, AOI:Bionix is a supurb piece of finely crafted, smokey basline, slick produced hip hop. A real antidote to the (fantastic) Eminem Show.
