It is great to hear new material by the Verve. I do not agree that this sounds like a Richard Ashcroft solo record, it is far superior to that.... It contains outstanding songs including Sit and Wonder and Judas. Not sure why this has had negative reviews as the material is pure quality.
Release Date July 01, 1995
Believe the vast majority of reviews here: A Northern soul is not as commercial or immediately accessible as Urban Hymns, but infinitely more powerful and balanced and contains some of The Verve's best work.

This was the first oasis album i bought after having bought stop the clocks. This is one of the best albums i own and is probably the most listened to on my iPod. There isnt a song on here that i dont like, even the instumentals are entertaining. Definitly 5 out of 5

A terrible lot of old rubbish. Possibly some of the worst music in the entire history of Western civilization. The vocals are nazalised and grating. The music is an unoriginal copy of the Beatles, but without the imagination of Lennon/McCartney. In fact, Oasis amount to little more than a tenth-rate Beatles tribute band. The lyrics are very badly written and lack poetic qualities. If there was any justice, every extant copy would be burnt along with the original mastertapes, to prevent anyone ever having to endure the torment of hearing this "music" ever again. I wish I could have given this 0 out of 5, or possibly minus infinity.

Parachutes is still my favourit album from Coldplay. This album contributed to coldplays success with great songs Shivers, Yellow, High Speed, Everythings not lost. What can I say one of the best English bands ever.

One of the things you're generally supposed to say about debuts that you don't think are that good is that they hint at a band's potential and their future direction but if I said that about the Verve's debut it would just be a lie. It's unbelievable that this is the band who several years later would record Urban Hymns, and that's not just because of the difference in the quality of the music but the styles, I never thought it was possible for a band to go from Shoegaze to BritPop, especially not so quickly.
Before I even start to get into the songs one thing I have to say about this album is that I really don't like how Ashcroft's voice is presented, it's buried deep in the mix and surrounded by tonnes of echo; now there are many bands who I ... Read More:

Ok, for the people who don't like this album I say - you're all mad and have no taste in music whatsoever.
For the people like myself, who absolutely LOVE this album, I say - good on you, it's obvious you have brilliant taste in music!!!
There are no bad songs on this album, they are all genius - fabulous lyrics, catchy tunes and fantastic guitar. There are a couple of standout songs for me, so here they are (in order of the listing on the CD):
Politik: Coldplay were right to choose this song as an opener, it really works for the album. It took about two listens to get into it, and then it became a firm favourite. Has a real meaning too.
In My Place: Fantastic drumming at the start and the guitars are amazing. Great lyrics!

after listening to the bends little over a year ago which is the first album i thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish. I heard about o.k. computer which was allegedy superior this astounded me because i thought the bends was as good as it got. Welllllllll after being somewhat sceptical i sampled a few songs and was addicted to airbag and intrigued by paranoid android but hadn't ventured any further for some ludicrous reason after a few months i finally had the sense to play the whole album a little overwhelmed as this was an experience that i was complelety unfamiliar with i didn't know quite what to make of it a few weeks later i replayed it making sure their were no distractions words can't describe how blown away i was on the second, third, fourth, fifth, ..... listen ... I notice one of the tags for this album is 'music'. Yeah!
Coldplay, whadda they sound like?
well, sort of... music, really.
Whoo! I got to get me some of that!
Yes, it's the sonic equivalent of watching paint dry...
I'm sorry. I don't HATE this stuff. But that's the point... it's so WET. When did people like this get to masquerade as rock musicians? It's bad for you. Your children will grow up thinking this is what a rock band sounds like. Zeppelin who? no, I wanna listen to the guys who go "waaa.. waa... I'm sad and feeble..." When there's the likes of Gutter Twins, Aquila, Rufus Wainwright and The Veils out there barely making a dent, you should not be spending your money and valuable time on this.

This, for me personally is my favourite Coldplay album yet.
I think they're finding their sound, expressing their personality and experimenting on this album making it much more interesting, daring and individual than X&Y and even A rush of Blood.
I like this new, evolving nature in Coldplay, more of the same please!
