Simply one of the best hard rock lp's ever made. Recorded during the band's prime era, 1968. Starts off with "Ramblin' Rose" and their sole hit "Kick Out The Jams", as the MC 5's members rips through, what proves to be a most memorable blistering live set. Who could turn away from "Motor City Is Burning" and their astounding cover of Sun Ra's "Starship"? Talk about a trend setting album. It's safe to assume that without the MC 5, there probably would never have been Motorhead, Sex Pistols, Monster Magnet, the Melvins, Soundgarden.....you get the point. Comes with a full-color two-sided six-page fold-out that includes some nifty band photos and memorabilia. Definitely recommended.

A must have. Hell had already performed versions of some of the key tracks - including Love Comes in Spurts and Blank Generation - during his spells with Television and the Heartbreakers. But the versions on this legendary album finally allowed the songs to stand out as some of the great recordings of the punk period. Hell's lyrics - among the sharpest of the era - find their ideal foil with Ivan Julian and Robert Quine's uncanny guitar interplay. While Hell's wordplay and decent bass playing fitted made him an ideal frontman, Quine is in many ways the star of the show. His remarkable solos heralded the arrival of a major talent, whose work - despite spells with Lou Reed, Lloyd Cole and Matthew Sweet - never really got the recognition that one ... Read More:

This album is as iconic as the band that recorded it. A true punk classic - it is music from the streets - music from the gutter -this is what real punk was, totally no frills music and image. No fancy production and wardrobe like other bands of the time, this group where real and the album reflects this. All the songs are blistering corkers, apart from 'i wanna be your boyfriend', which ive always thought was a bit soppy and poppy, but over the years it has grew on me and is to me an essential track on the album. Songs like 'i dont wanna walk around with you' and the way it fuses into the ending track 'today your love tomorrow the world' is pure class. 'Now i wanna sniff some glue', 'judy is a punk' and especially '53rd and 3rd' still send tingles ... Read More:

In a now (in)famous appearance in 1973 for the BBC's music programme The Old Grey Whistle Test the decidedly unimpressed presenter Bob Harris dismissively introduced the New York Dolls as pale imitators of the Rolling Stones and as 'mock rock'. Rock 'N Roll, dovetailing the whole of their cocky, confident debut album with the lion's share of its underrated follow-up Too Much Too Soon, convincingly shows Harris's cheap jibes to be fallacious. As Patti Smith Group guitarist Lenny Kaye remarks in his adulatory liner notes: "They were a bridge between generations, a missing link, a ragged glory that would replicate itself endlessly through rock's successive generations, from the Ramones-Clash-Sex Pistols axis through the Smiths... and Nirvana".

First note: if you're very picky about vocals you might not like Tom Verlaine's voice. He sounds like a yodeller who's been punched in the throat. I actually think it has character, but a lot of my friends detest Television because of how the vocalist sings. If you like weird vocalists, though, you might like him.
But where Television really come to the front is their guitar work. Make no mistake, these aren't Eric Clapton-type guitarists. Although they have the big solos they're not blues based: using more jazzy scales (which is very odd for a band considered at the forefront of punk), Television craft 8 unique, very powerful songs that redefine how the guitar can be used. When I first bought this album I just found it very pleasurable to listen ... Read More:

If you like music that is poetic, intelligent and rocks like a Godzilla with his tail on fire then you will love Patti Smith. Horses is a good first choice for anyone who wants to know her music.

This expanded remaster of The Stooges' 1969 debut is extremely welcome both for the quality of the remaster (it sounds absolutely brilliant) and for the quality of some of the extra material on the second disc. The contents are basically split into three: the original album on CD1, some unused mixes by producer John Cale which start CD2, and a kind of alternative version of most of the album taking up the rest of CD2.
For anyone that's never heard this, the original album contains three of Iggy Pop's all-time classics in No Fun, I Wanna Be Your Dog and 1969. These and Ann were the only songs they had when they arrived at the studio; they filled out the rest of the album with three new songs written in one evening (Little Doll, Not Right and Real Cool Time) ... If you have you know what you're getting with this one. Perhaps the New York Dolls would have evolved and diversified if they hadn't fallen apart as they did, but this album isn't much of a representation of that. That probably sounds like a criticism, but I assure you it's not. The first album, "New York Dolls" was a great album, and another brush with the pop/punk/glam formula that made it what it was is a welcome one, it's not like they released a huge body of work in their short and self-destructive lifespan.
Perhaps this album contains a little more of the cynical humour the band offered so effectively, but it's only a magnification of an existing element, not any great change.
So if you heard and liked the first album, then get this one. If you didn't hear ... Read More:
