Where do I start with this fantastic body of work? I remember many moons ago, my dad playing this album and the opening bars of "Good Times Roll" stuck in my head and it wasn't all that long ago when those bars came back to me but I couldn't remember which album it was. So I went through all those vinyl albums he had and finally found it and straight away bought it on CD. Now about the album itself. "Good Times Roll" is my favourite track has it holds the most memories for me. "My Best Friends Girl" is a track that I can't imagine anyone not liking, a classic single. Candyo [Us Import]

After their fantastic debut album this record had a lot to live up to! For me though this is very nearly as good an album as that debut. Singles 'Lets Go' and 'It's All I Can Do" are typical Cars. Quirky and catchy both are easily up to the standard of anything on the first album. 'Nightspots' is also a bona-fide classic punchy, rocky yet with that commercial edge that the Cars managed to embody in all of their best records. The other single from this album 'Double Life' was a strange choice as a single and is perhaps one of the lesser tracks on offer here but if you can resist the powerful title track you are a better man than I. If you liked the first album you will like this so BUY IT!

Shake It Up

After the relatively dissapointing 'Panorama' album, 'Shake It Up' somewhat restored fans belief in the band. Though not quite up to the standard of their debut or 'Candy O', this album contains it's own bona-fide Cars classics in the shape of the all too short 'Since You're Gone' and the massive U.S hit title track. Also great are 'I'm Not The One', 'Victim Of Love' and 'This Could Be Love'. As for the rest of the set, 'A Dream Away' takes a few listens but grows on you, 'Think It Over' is typical Cars but not quite their best and 'Maybe Baby' an average album track, still, on the whole album only the dull 'Cruiser' is a dissapointment. If you liked the first two albums you should get this, I think you'll like it!

Panorama

an interesting album, Ocasek probably wanting to assert the bands experimental side after selling multi platinum on the first two
yet the songs are not as strong, there's a respectable effort to keep the cars quirky as well as pop
"Touch and go" was a modest hit, guitarist Elliot Easton shows why he's new waves best lead player with the concise and beautiful lead on that one
"Gimme some slack" is good not great and the title track "Panorama" is somewhat dull yet shows the bands impeccable muscianship "getting through" and attempt at another "don't cha stop" falls flat and is dull
the second side has a left overs feel except for "Up and down" a pogo rock gem this and "touch and go" are the best tracks

Greatest Hits

The Cars wrote and recorded a good number of sharp, pithy, angular pop songs in their 10+ year career. Some of them are included here, but many are not. In their place we get the Record Company Man-in-suit's choice of singles from albums such as Candy-O, Panorama and Shake It Up and miss out on some gems.

There are some superb songs here; no-one could argue with a large chunk of the track selection and the choices from the debut album and "Heartbeat City" are pretty much on the money. However, I'd gladly have traded the feeble title track from Shake It Up for something like "Victim of Love" from the same album. Into the Gap

The original UK Arista 9 song vinyl album was flawless. A fantastic collection of songs. This Edsel CD reissue Into the Gap is everything a CD transfer should not be.

One of the main attractions of the vinyl issue (and of the Thompson Twins in general) was it's lovely bass content together with a crisp top end (which fitted the punchy dance aspect of the music perfectly). This Edsel CD reissue has litterally stripped away almost all of the bass and boosted the top end to a daft level. The result: this Edsel CD made my left ear rattle because of the distortion. Really awful.

No other CD I have ever bought or heard has sounded quite so lousy (with the exception of T.Rex - 'Dandy In The Underworld' - also on the Edsel label). Even very old original CDs mastered ... Read More:

The Definitive Cars

This enjoyable album is packed with hits. The sound of The Cars was rock with a new wave sensibility and plenty of pure pop hooks. All their best work is here, including such great 1970s hits as My Best Friend's Girl, Just What I Needed, Let's Go, Shake It Up, Good Times Roll, Moving In Stereo and You're All I've Got Tonight. If you like 1970s and early 1980s power pop and rock as represented by the early Tom Petty, Roxy Music, Blondie, Pat Benatar, The Knack, Meat Loaf and even AC/DC, you'll really love this album. Most of these hits are drawn from their first eponymously titled album from 1978 and from Heartbreak City (1984) but those were their best albums, almost best ofs in themselves. These memorable, energetic and tuneful songs have stood the test of time very well.

Visage

Yes this is good album, I originally puchased this when I was 16 way back in 1980. I was blown away with the track "fade to grey" the single and video on TOTP's although not the first release from this album. Musically the album is a classic and buy it for that, sonically unfortunately it's badly in need of some re-mastering and tweaking with possibly the inclusion of some extra tracks! or, 12" mixes of Vis-age, and Fade to Grey. The sound is compressed on the cd mastering and there is a lot of analogue tape hiss on my copy from the Polydor release. Who ever owns the copywrite to this album please do it justice and polish the sound up! Thanks.

Scary Monsters: Remastered

This is my favourite Bowie Classic album. Its good because its on a different level to his other albums it comes at you from different levels first hearing this album, i was not so sure, but Ashes to Ashes lifts the album with by now familiarity, before delving back into the depths just to be lifted for air once more with the brilliant Fashion, but commercial this album definitely is. Up the hill back wards also by now a classic in its own right, this album does not take long to get really into it, and where Ashes to Ashes works as a single piece of art, the album as a whole is pure magic and does take you on a journey but one that you just know you will come out of the other side. The Division Bell

This isn't just my favourite Floyd album but my favourite album of all time. If it was vinyl I would have worn it out years ago. I don't even know who Roger Waters is/was and his presence could not have improved this superb CD.
Sure, old Floyd stuff is good but this is their best.
